Mazda Astina BJ Variable Intermittent Wipers

Do you have a Mazda 323 BJ model?
Do you wish it had variable speed intermittent wipers?
Now you can!!
It's pretty simple actually.
Just go to the wreckers and get the wiper stalk off a Ford Laser hatch if you have a hatch or sedan if you have a Protege. Make sure its the same year model if you can.
There are only a few screws that hold the shroud that goes around the steering wheel center in and a couple that hold the wiper stalk in place.
The plugs are the same so there is no wiring to change and in a matter of a couple of minutes you have variable speed wipers.
I can now vary my wipers on intermittent from wiping every sec to 10 sec.
Why Mazda didn't do this in the first place when Ford had them in the Laser I dont know??
My wiper stalk cost me about $30 a few years ago from the wreckers and has worked perfectly since.
Its a nice little mod and I use it in the Qld rain all the time.

thats cleaver.

normally you'd think the more expensive mazda varient would have it, and the cheaper ford varients would not.

Yeah its weird all my previous Mazda's I have had came with it and some were made in the mid 80's so I found it a bit strange not to have it even as an option.
I don't think the SP 20 has them either.
If not now they can.
I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere here so I thought I'd let people know about it.

My 97 Astina has intermittent wipers, but the 07 3 does not. Weird! But the new gen 3 does.

I can confirm that the SP20's do not have intermittent wipers.

I can remember seeing a how to on mazdas247 where they were using the same wiper stalk from a bravo? dont quote me on that though....

was stupid i had to buy them in the first place!! cost me $90 from Grawill Ford in Gosford.... but it made a world of difference!

you can also butcher the stalk off a 626 and the MPV - i believe that the tribute/ford explorer may be the same, but check the stalk first before removing, it will be immediately obvious!

I remember the first time driving the ba in the rain and stumbling on the intermittent adjusting. Ahhhhh fond memories.

Ok if you have a hatch get the wiper stalk of a Laser hatch of the same year as your car, and if you have a sedan use the sedan part. I think its the KN/KQ Laser you need the parts off.
The only difference is the hatchs have rear wipers and sedans dont, so if you get the wrong part you wont be able to use your rear window wiper or will have a switch that does nothing.
The only reason I'm saying to use the same year model is so that they would be a bolt in swap and have a similar amount of wear.
I can take pics if anyone is interested.
It took me a whole 5 min to swap mine.
If you need a hand let me know.

Hmm, might investigate in this seeing Ihave to remove/replace steering wheels soon.

Mat, we'll need the stalk out of a KQ.

Cheers

Its a really easy swap. It wil take you longer to find the parts than it will to fit them. It is really worth it as i use them almost every time i rains here in Qld. Once done and used a few times you will wonder why it never came with it in the first place.

which is also why the identical parts on the tribute/explorer are best for hatches and the 626 is best for sedans

or of course the matching laser model

KN or KQ won't make a lick of difference they are the same part number
