Question Airbag lights...

Hey guys, i was just wondering if any one has had their cars (323 Protege-ish) airbag control unit fail, before i pay $900 to get it replaced .

I was driving along on a semi-bumpy road (Exiting M4 off to blacktown... the irony was i was getting my car tinted -.-) when i was stopped at a traffic light and the steering felt weird (asif ABS kicked in) then the airbag light started flashing. I couldn't really tell what code it was (after reading online about the light flashes in relation to error code) as it kept changing. =/

I was told by the mechanics that the debug device they used to connect to airbag control unit couldnt get a response out of it. In addition, it could possibly be my alternator that sent a voltage spike through it and it could happen again to the new airbag control unit after spending $900.

Anyone else had a similiar experience or words of advice?

Thanks in advance!

I just tried the local mechanics which he gave the car to an Auto Electrician around the corner. Hmm i might take your advice and try Mazda Penrith though, looking at ebay the unit alone costs ~$110 from US which doesnt make sense why he'd want to charge $900.

Cheers!

UPDATE (late i know):
Took it to Mazda and was told that some Airbag G-Force Sensor (i really don't recall the exact part name) under the center console was faulty and it ended up costing $850 (including all costs) all up. All done at the Mazda dealership, for those who run into any similiar problems.
