I reckon the first thing you should get is a decent head unit. The astinas speakers are pretty darn good for stockies..... Get urself a nice little pioneer jobbie with singel or dual rca outs depending on what u wanna do later, and you'll be set. Mp3 headunits are pertty cool to although they don't really conform to the 'budget" system (around $450 mark for jvc i think)

I'm biased towards pioneer cos they look good, sound good, work good, and allow you to control the audio frequencies better than any other HU i have seen.

Jus hook the headunit speaker outputs to your original speaker wiring and you'll have a good base to upgrade from.

good luck,

Sub

Take a look around and decide what you could afford in a year.
Make a plan and stick to it. Build the system up as you can afford, parts may change but the planned package shouldn't. A nicly ballanced system should be your goal.

if ur not very technical then its possibly a good idea to get one of those head unit wiring harnesses so that you wont have to do any manual wiring. You should be able to find a Mazda -> Whatever brand HU you buy.

Firstly, set a budget. Secondly, decide on what sort of sound you're after - do you want to impress all your mates with how loud your car can doof or are you after something that will sound good? In any case, do your stereo up in stages and buy quality components the first time around - that way you wont lose as much money when you decide to upgrade your stereo.

If you're starting from scratch, I'd go with a new HU and front speakers first, then when you can afford it add a sub and an amp in. What sort of budget do you have in mind?

Sony makes pretty decent HUs and amps, but I'd choose other brands over Sony for speakers/subs. What other brands have you got over there?

Seeing as you're in Europe, check out DLS (Sweden), CDT Audio (Denmark), Hertz (Italy), Boston Acoustics (USA). You'll probably need to go to a specialist car audio store to find some of these brands, but they're all worth having a listen to if you can find them.

Another word of advice - buy speakers/subs that you like the sound of with the music that you play. So audition as many as you can within your budget and buy the ones you like the best, not the ones salespeople will tell you to buy.
