Oil pump is ready to go

As part of my build I be will getting the Doc B oil pump service performed on my oil pump. This consists of coating the oil pump internals to make the pump perform more efficiently by increasing the pressure and flow. The stock pressure relief value would normal not allow this so it is removed and an external pressure control unit is installed. More details on this a bit later.

So here is the oil pump, which has been cleaned and is ready to be sent to the States for the service:

Yah DocB is trying to source me a 2nd hand pump atm for this. Just need to work out what im gonna do about a oil pan. Should help a bit eh Are you going to run a bigger after market filter along with this?

Would like a pan with some baffling to avoid the risk of running dry, but the AWR pan is a) expensive (when factored in with postage) and b) interferes with a few bits n pieces.

The type of filter I will end up running will depend on what kind of remote oil filter mount I end up going with - researching it at the moment.

I won't be going with an AWR pan either for similar reasons. However, I will be putting baffles into my stock oil pan.This week I'm checking out an engineering shop that I hope will help me out with a few welding jobs. If they are any good I will PM you their details

best one to use is probably the series 2 RX-8 filter or Subaru filter... it has a higher pressure relief valve set because they run higher oil pressures... this prevents the filter from being bypassed

both the RX-8 and Subaru mounting size is the same as the stock FS one... RX-8 being a taller filter, but subaru is same exact size as our stock filter

Well my oil pump is back from the States, yay!

So the internal workings of the pump have been coated to provide tighter tolerances and therefore more pressure. The stock pressure relief valve (built into the pump) has been removed and an external PRV will be installed along with the oil filter relocation kit already in the car.

Now that the pump is back, I can move onto other things, such as:
- getting the crank machined
- putting baffles in the oil pan
- buying rebuild parts

So, the cat is out of the bag with the latest upgrades and I thought it would time to put up a post about what happened with the headlights and the front grill.

The headlights were built by MattV in the States and I think that it has taken about two years from when I got the original headlight to when the were installed - they sat in my garage for 18 months of that though

Here is a close up of the headlight installed:


They are a bi-xenon projector with 35W digital ballasts and 5000k bulbs. The result of all of this is much better lighting than stock. See below:


The other piece of the puzzle was a new grill. This took a bit of work but what it comprises of is a stock grill core with a lower grill piece cut out to form the mesh, and then an AutoExe grill placed over the top. Here is it sitting together:

I think I have run out of other stuff to do, and will just have to suck it up and get this engine rebuilt

Why do this to meeeeeeee? Looks so freaking hot dude! Lovin the grille, still in love with that front lip... And the headlights look sweet to!
You are the reason why I want to spend even more money!

Very smart idea with the grille btw. I was going to do the hexagonal mesh for the front bar and grille (same mesh as ferrari's, Lambo Audi's etc)
But now you got me thinking I should do that

That's what is different about the grill! I was looking at it thinking it looked different but couldn't put my finger on it. It looks stock! But not!

Still loving the headlights like i said on Saturday.

Car's looking great, grille looks good. I matched my lower grille to the upper one but that way looks much better

Thanks for the comments guys!

Picked up some shiney things today. I am well on my way to getting the crank ground and the whole rotating assembly balanced. Just waiting on some bearings and seals which should turn up by the end of the month. In the meantime I will be doing the final little things like scrubbing bolts clean and getting consumables like greases, assembly lube and plastigage.

2012 Dyno

I knew I forgotten to post about this

Latest dyno chart from the 2012 Dyno Day!


You can see it tapering off at the end of the rev range, which it didn't do last time - even thought that run showed less power. I think that was due to old spark plugs that I forgot to change before the day. The major difference between this one and the one I had done two years ago was that the CIA was installed and the car got another road tune (which also got rid of a lean top end due to the custom midpipe.

Overall happy with it as it showed better midrange power than Phil or Marc and we all ended up with about the same power at the end. With the new engine, I want to be shooting for 160-170 whp

Please no comments about this dyno chart in this thread guys. I will post it in the Dyno Day thread and you can comment there. Cheers

So a bit of an update - finally

With the Doc B oil system, the oil pressure regulator valve in the oil pump is removed (or blocked off) and this function is performed by an external regulator (see previous posts). The regulator works but maintaining pressure through siphoning some of the oil out of the oil lines (between the engine block adaptor and the remote oil filter mount) and sending it back to the engine.

In order to allow for the oil to return to the engine, it is necessary to provide an AN-10 port into the engine for this returning oil. Looking through the Doc B oil pump thread on Mazdas247 and talking to Tom, the best place for this is in the Main Bearing Supporting Plate. In this location it is above the level of the oil (which sits in the oil pan) and can flow uninhibited and is not being pumped onto the crank and creating windage.

So, I ended up putting the port in about the area that the oil dipstick exits its external tube and heads down into the oil pan. This location will also be reasonable easy to access and is free of all the belts on the motor.

It has been packed away as another piece of the puzzle that is all ready to go.

Otherwise, as a general update, I have been cleaning bolts and various bits and pieces in between saving for parts and projects along the way. Hopefully, I will have all the rebuid parts before the end of the year and have all the projects completed by March. I have decided that this wont be complete before the wedding but will make a great project to come back to in the middle of the year (and when I have money to spend) to finish off!
