Under Bonnet Sound Sheet

Hi,

The sheet of material under the bonnet has fallen off. It was dangling dangerously for the last week and it finally came off while I was servicing the car.

I couldn't find the exact replacement but got a universal sponge replacement that I can cut to size (cost about 43 dollar from SuperCheap). It's a little thick, and it doesn't seem to help deadening the sound at all. Even the old one didn't seem to have any effects. But it sure feels comforting to have it on as my last car had oil spluttered all over the underside of the bonnet.

I'm just worried that the heat of the engine might burn it, or the engine might get hotter as a result. It was designed specifically to fit under the bonnet though.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Matthew

Its mainly there to avoid heat damaging the paint on your bonnet. Ive had mine off for over 2 years and the paint hasnt bubbled yet.

Nothing some well placed heat shield cant fix anyway.

That little extra engine noise isnt nice when your HLA's are shot :P Id prefer to keep the insulation to protect your paint,if not keep your bonnet well polished and waxed 8)

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'll probably keep it on for the time being since I've already spent 40 bucks on it. When it falls off again, I wouldn't rush to get a replacement for sure.

This is the first car that I've seen with that sheet under the bonnet though. I do agree the sound sure feels good  when driving.

Remove the front and rear rubbers on the bonnet to allow air to flow through to stop any
chance of paint peeling on the bonnet. Years of driving around with a BPT and the only
damage my bonnet doesn't have is peeling from heat. Stone chips, bent and busted is another
story altogether.

into the engine bay, perhaps, but the drop in temperature is worth it as far as i'm concerned.

and my engine bay is dirty anyway. darn dirt roads!

I only remove the back seal so it can allow hot air out from under the bonnet.
i did not remove the front one so nothing can come into under the bonnet

having water in the engine bay is no problem at all. they are designed for that (within reason of course). take your car for a drive on very wet roads while it's raining and the engine bay will all be soaked no matter what you leave on or remove.

as rupe said, 5 degrees decrease in temp is worth it

I'd only remove the rear rubber, the area around the windscreen wipers is an area of low preasure and as such air will be drawn from under the hood and over the roof. The engine bay will then need to get more air from somewhere... either from underneath or through the radiator.
If it's through the radiator then the cooling system, A/C and FMIC will benefit
If it's from under the car then welcome (so very very very very very very slightly) to the world of ground effects.

In the long run drawing hot air from the engine is better than trying to ram cold air around it
