Performance Upgrades for 2001 323 SP20
A newbie to the forum here. I have a 2001 323 SP20, done 50000km's, with no mods. Looking for advise on the best performance mods I can do to squeeze some more KW's & Tourqe out of the SP20. I have read quite a few postings in the performance section here, though I'm confused as to what path to take. Unichip, Exhust, Headers, etc.
Have also seen postings on attempts to Turbo the SP20 in Aus and talk about trying to replicate the Mazdaspeed Turboed Protege, though can't see any more on the outcomes of these projects. Can anyone shed any light?

A good sized exhaust system say 2.5" with a panel K&N filter to the
stock airbox and some CAI are the best things you can do. The exhaust should be large enough for a low boost turbo setup to save double spending. Wouldn't buy the headers as if turbo is your ultimate goal then they are of no use for your final product. Regards Mal

But watch the size of the exhaust, depending on what you want to do with the motor of the car down the track........
No offence to Mal, and am sure he won't take offence from me of all people, LOL. :P mwah! Decide what your final product is going to be first.... whether or not you are going to mod the motor and to what extent!! There are a few guys on here with some really nice SP20's that they have done work on... Decide if you want performance first or looks first... then figure out how far you want to go with performance, how far you are prepared to go with the motor, if you are going to go turbo or not, etc.... Until you figure out where you want to end up, you can't really know where you are going to start from...... There are heaps of cheap and easy mods you can do (which is exactly what I did to my BA) before you get to important stuff like what exhaust you want, and therefore what size you need blah blah blah..... Check out the performance parts and mods list that Astina GT members have put time and effort into, it is a great help and will set you in the right direction. Cheers, good luck and a big WELCOME! |

Mal, 2.5" is way to big... no offence, but not everybody who owns a car and wants to start modding necessarily wants to bolt a snail to the side of their engine!!!
go for 2 or 2.25" piping for the exhaust... totally agree with the panel filter plus CAI. |

I dont take offense, its all good and everybody has a different opinion.
For a 1.8L I would recomend a 2" to 2 1/4 size exhaust. For a 2L a 2 1/4 to 2.5inch. 2.5inch is on the large size but as long as you dont use a straight through muffler and stick with a chambered unit you should have enough backpressure for decent bottom end. I said 2.5 as the guy was talking going turbo so I was making a suggestion to cover both mods otherwise I would have said 2 1/4. I should have pointed that out more clearly so deserved to be slammed by you and kitty. Regards Mal

The aim I spose is to get better performance out of the SP20 first then worry about the cosmetics later. I ulitmatly would like to bolt on a Turbo, though I think I'll hold off and wait until the Warrenty runs out and I have seen some more feedback on other turboed setups (imports or Aus installed).
So for now I'll be basically looking at: 1. A 2.25" Pipe from the first CAT back? 2. Should I put a 2nd CAT in, say a Hiflow CAT or leave no 2nd CAT? 3. A panel K&N filter 4. A CAI system, is there a Jap import CAI airbox on the market, or do I bodge one up. 5. Unichip? After doing that, ruffley what would the performance gain be?? Tell me, is the New Turboed Mazdaspeed Protege5 the same engine as the 2001 SP20 ?? Any comments.
