Brake Machining

Anyone done this? My last service indicated that my front brakes needed machining, should I just go ahead and have them done or get new rotors (or am I missing the point entirely?)

Machining the brake rotors are a good cheap way of making your brakes feel like new, I have had it done on the eunos and my honda civic, fixed both cars for any shudder and they brake a hell of lot better now.

Arguably you should do it everytime you change your pads to ensure maximum contact between the pad and rotor and a flat surface.

only machine the rotors if total thickness variation exceeds the manufacturers recommendations, or if the rotor surfaces aren't normal to their axis of rotation. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about minor grooving and scoring as the pads will quickly bed into these surface variations.

I reckon getting your rotors machined each and every time you change pads is a quick(er) way to go through rotors. For sure measure up the rotors for thickness variation etc.

But that is my $0.02 worth.

i saw a van go past last weeked which advertised mobile brake machining - they'll come to your workplace/home etc. I'd look to something like that because I hate losing the car for a day.

On Car machining is not as good as proper machining I had it done
once and ended up with heaps of squeal had to have them properly done
afterwards so was a waste of money.

Thanks for the replies guys, was expecting it to be a big expense. Might just get all 4 discs done and have the pads replaced then. Mal, roughly how much did you pay for off car machining?

I was quoted $20 per disk at ABS last week. That was for grinding which apparently removes less material than a lathe (your disks last longer).

Thanks Rod, might take my car back over to Melbourne early next year and get them done at ABS then. I'll grab the pads before I go and get them to fit those aswell.
