Get something other then generic PSU, say Corsair, Silverstone, Antec. Umart had the 1tb drives for like 90 something the other day. 64bit windows7 or dont bother. That RAMS pretty pricey, can get Ripjaws for 170 from umart 9-9-9 @ 2N 200mhz good stuff. 5850s arent really worthy the dosh, get a 4890 or 5770 for value for money. |

I'd go for a 600-650W PSU for some overhead, although a 500W will cover you.

Nope that looks to me a solid build. Id recommend a Pioneer drive over LG though, waaaay better write strategies.

I just bought a new system by the way.
plays nfs shift and batman: arkham asylum seamlessly, like a dream, under a grand. intel core 2 duo 7500 @ 2.93ghz 2gb ram (chucking in another 2 soon fo ****z) geforce 9800gt gpu 1.5tb hard drive this cost me $840 with also the obvious case, psu, mobo. opted not for an optical drive as I had one already so it shaved the price to make way for upgrade from 9500gt to 9800gt before build. so yeah, our prices in tassie are more, you could get something better for that price I reckon. |

I just built my bro a pc, good for mid-high range gaming but on a budget:
Core i5 750 (2.66 quad) Asus P7P55 LX 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 ram (2x2GB) Inno3d GTX 275 - 896MB 2x 1TB WD green power hdd Soundblaster XFi XtremeGamer sound card Thermaltake evo_blue 750W powersupply in a Coolermaster CM690 case with Phillips 23" 1080p LCD w/ speaker and hdmi input runnning windows 7 x64 home premium about $1800 I reckon anyone getting new computers to get 64 bit windows only to make use of all your ram (including video ram) - otherwise you're wasting your money! |

Ok so far decided on these:
Intel core i7-860 2.8ghz $335 Seagate SATA 1TB $101 Seasonic M12 80+ 600w $149 Coolermaster HAF922 $165 2x 120mm fans (extra) $14 LG SATA 22x $39 Samsung 21.5" Full HD Wide Screen P2250 $189 Windows 7 HP 64bit OEM $115 Still looking into ram, graphics and motherboard. Question: I've been comparing the GTX 275 and the quoted 5770 and have come to this conclusion from all the reviews. The GTX is a better card, but the 5770 supports DirectX11, unlike the GTX. Does this really matter? I'm a little confused how DirectX matters. Should i go for the 5770 on this basis? It is also $85 cheaper. Oh, do i need a sound card? |

In regards to the LG vs Pioneer. Yes im sure The other problem you face is that you wont really be able to burn at 22x anyway. Unless you go to the bother of reading speedlabs and working out what Discs contain good MID so that you can burn at those speeds. I used to, but found the effort and risk of a bad burn not worth the extra time it took to do a burn at 16 or 20 times. Also the WD 1GB Caviar Blacks are about the same price and are killer drives. They are very hawt atm Personally id grab a GTX275.

I'd rather get WD - I have a few mates that have had various problems with the seagates over the last couple of years.... (and rma'ing them is a pain the the arse)
I was tempted to recommend my bro a 5770, but dx11 is new and not that many games support them. You're reallly better off getting a faster dx10 card. Also dx11 wont be that much more eye candy than dx10 and most games run on dx9 anyways. DX 11 has slightly better ambient affects.... you wont notice it at all really. If you're going to dx11 cards you're probably better off getting the top of the line card, but then you may as well wait for the next gen GTX cards. If you can get the pioneer for same price, id do that too. also be careful of picking the correct socket for the i7..... i dont remember which one the 860 is but there are two sockets - 1366 and 1156 (?), the first one i think does tripple channel ddr3 and the last one does ddr3 dual channel. also if you want great sound (spesh for gaming and production) and cbf with the onboard sound card get a creative XFi extreme game - dont get the standard xfi, I have been told that they don't use the fully fledged hardware like the extreme gamer does and you may be better off with the onboard.

I have an SB X-Fi Extreem Gamer [it's spelt gay...], and the sound quality is stellar! The only problem with the Gamer model is that you can't use the MIC plug for SP-DIF in/out like even cheap Audigys could [which I also have]... Now you have to consider that you could actually just get an Audigy II with the optional extra SP-DIF module for less than half the price of the elite X-Fi model that supports it. Or if your motherboard supports SP-DIF or coaxial, you could configure the motherboard audio for that stuff to work in parallel... This would never bother most ppl, unless if you have a HTPC or wan't to run digital audio from your XPOX 360 or POS3 into your PC>speakers...

Asus Xonar are much much better cards:
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=10940 They have much better DACs then the Xfi series. Personally i stick with onboard due to crappy driver support by creative. Although once the Xonar STX comes into stock i will be purchasing myself one Nullando thats not true in regards to DX9 and DX10. DX10 is used primarily now a days, HDR is a Dx10 feature. If need be i can go into more depth but essentially Dx10.1 has functions that make certain game aspects alot easier compared to Dx9, reducing the amount of time needed to code a scene or such. Bloom = Dx9 HDR = Dx10

In terms of DirectX, granted dx10 is a bit of a leap on dx9, but I dont see much of a jump in dx10 - dx11. Not for now at least, and by then, dx11.x cards would be out, so yea I still reckon the GTX 275 or better will be the way to go.

I have 2 Xonars at home, one in my HTPC running into a $10000 sound system and the other in my Main PC running Logitech Z-5500's, as far as i know they are the only sound card capable of taking 5.1 surround and outputting via spdif in DTS interactive or Dolby Digital, windows has a problem where it cannot re encode audio into 5.1 via digital, the xonar gets around this by doing the re encoding on the card in realtime.
Onboard audio and Creative sound cards are only capable of 5.1 pass thru. Unlike the Xonars and their ability to do 5.1. The best example i can give is that if you are playing games in 5.1 on a normal sound card via digital you only get the front 2 speakers. Unlike the Xonar which The xonar certainly sounds better than any sound card I have tried and is certainly better than a X-FI, and after creatives BS driver fiasco with Vista i shall never buy another sound card off them. |

Amen brother, i bought a Xfi just as Vista came out worst mistake ever. Software wouldnt function, drivers would crap out. Sound would stop when swapping from game to movie or such. Was ****, and the company wouldnt do anything about it. Took them forever to fix.

You guys forgot to mention that the X-Fi's would crap out with 4GB+ RAM on a 64bit OS...
I rang into this problem the first time I installed the driver after going to Windows7 64bit. |
