I was actually using one of those little rubber mat things for undoing jars in the kitchen It still kept slipping, but maybe my lanky fingers just aren't up to the task.
Will have to try harder next time I guess that explains why there was oil all around the sump. It must make a mess each time you pull the filter off? |

not neceseraly they shouldnt leak straight away, and if your carefull only a little bit will come out if you have oil around the sump might be leaking

I use a bike tyre to get a grip, not only does it give you the extra grip around the filter but if you twist it and turn it back on itself it's also gives you a similar mechanical advantage you would get with the filter wrench.

i use a $4 oil wrench from supercheap. but i also use a bigger oil filter also. if it was just the smaller regular one, it would turn by hand only if done every 5,000km.

unless ive got a major problem, suspension problem or rego or new car, ive never taken them to a shop to get maintained. i do most of my stuff myself anyways, its all fairly simple. ie this weekend was my service time for my BG;
- New plugs, indexed and gapped - new leads - distributor cap and rotor (checked points too) - flushed cooling system and new hoses / coolant - new oil / filter / fuel filter - cleaned my AFM (electrical solvent cleaner) and my throttle body / intake (heavy duty parts cleaner, wipe it out, dont let it drizzle down the intake) I also go along and just do a general check of all the bolts and nuts especially on suspension and steering... also good idea to take the inner out of your speedo cable and clean / lube it. EDIT: lol and your oil filter will only leak depending on what type you get. if you get one with a oil non-return valve then it just traps the oil inside and doesnt leak. i love em, the cheap ones... oil and crap going all over my motor and driveway. |

Cold, COLD day for servicing your Astina outside!
Have had my BA hatch for abut four weeks now, so thought it time I gave it a bit of a service so I know where it's up to.
Drained the radiator this morning and flushed it through with the hose to get any remaining crap out - the overflow reservoir was filthy too, so I took the damned thing out altogether and gave it a good old scrub. Still dirty-looking though - might have to grab a 2nd-hand one from a wrecker or something as it was a bitch to try and get inside with a brush... Replaced the wiper blades (they were making an AWFUL noise as they dragged across my windscreen!) and gave the wipers a quick blast of black paint while they were off as they looked ****house when looking out from inside my car. Also replaced one of my low-beam globes as it had broken. My GOD is that a fiddly pain-in-the-arse job to get your fingers into! Had to read through this thread for some tips on where to locate that bloody oil filter though - have got the car up on stands at the moment and needed a break from the freezing wind anyway. Will now go out and attempt to locate and remove it as per above recommendations! Treated myself to some Penrite oil and also got 4 new sparkplugs, so once the filter is dealt with will be quite happy driving around knowing that everything is fresh in there. - Adam (in Airport West, Melbourne)

Well after locating the pesky little bugger (it was only after checking out THIS photo that I ended up locating it) I was defeated by the oil filter this afternoon.
Not sure when it was last changed, but it was on SO tight that no amount of gripping with an old tyre had any impact upon loosening it! Tried using my oil filter wrench, but (apart from having a prick of a time getting it up there) I found it was too big for the filter! Was thinking about trying one of these from Autobarn but wanted to ask first if anyone else had used one with any degree of success... I really wish it was in a more accessible location - Mazda are normally better at planning stuff like this!!

only ever take car to Mech if/when I can't do it quick enough to justify saving $$$! Always good to have trusted Mech on hand though! I check water, oil & fluids every other day!

After trying few filter removing tools this was the only one that worked. I use a ratchet with a shorter handle for easier access.

Has anyone ever attempted taking oil filter off a B6T?...hmmmm, nice aint' it? You have to have a minature hand & be able to dig your fingers right inside side of filter (yes, screw driver job IF you can get one near it). Pipes sit RIGHT ON TOP of filter too!!! Then, unbeknown to you, filter shaft has been THREADED by last owner Even my mech can't get the flucka off! I managed to get a replacement special vented, adapter piece with seal & hoses (can you believe it?) that the B6T engine was fitted with n& thus, must be used (cools oil down while it is filtered)
