auto not changing

Just picked up a ba auto 1.8L - the auto seems to shift to 2nd only and wont shift to 3rd or 4th.
The owner thought the auto was slipping in gear but its actually not shifting up.
I am not too conversant with autos - have always had manuals - what should i b looking at first or is it a rip it out and give to tranmission shop?
Is there anything external to the transmission to look at?

Run the engine until warm and check the trans fluid level (with the engine running).
Top up is only through the dipstick tube so be patient.
