$1500 to spend on mods for SP20, what would you do?

Am not sure which whay I would like to go....the performance route or the body route (mainly because i see too many yellow sp20's on the road here in Adelaide). So far I have.....

Engine:
-4-2-1 extractors, 2 1/2" exhuast cat back (1st cat removed). Hi flow cat.
-Hi flow muffler with 4" tip.

Body:
-Yellow Astina SP20 body
-17" Chrome wheels
-red painted calipers
-Carbon Fibre Altezzas

Options for power:
-Unichip ? (have been quoted install of $1395 inc dyno b4 and after
-work on engine to increase to 2.1 or 2.2 litres (anyone know how this is done and cost ?

Options for Bodywork:
-Increase to 18" wheels
-have custom painted flames from front of car through to driver/passenger doors....orange blending to yellow.

Anything else ?

go the flames go the flames!!

.. what do you use your car for? it is a full time daily driver or do you like to take it for a 'sprited drive' in the hills?? maybe suspension is the way to go. why not get a pair of sway bars and some lowering springs to set off those wheels ... or even better a full set of coilovers!!

i'd go suspension before performance...otherwise you can't use the performance as you should!

your required list:

whiteline swaybars front and rear
front strut brace
lowering springs
camber bolts

I second that - suspension would definitely be my next option.

Lowering springs and sway bars would a good place to start.

How about some intake modifications - there's some pretty good bolt-on intakes available (Injen CAI, AEM SRI, K&N typhoon).

yep, suspension.

but then again, unichip (etc) to take advantage of the exhaust.

but since you've done a fair bit powerwise, i say go handling for a bit. $1500 will get you the whiteline sways, springs and maybe even shocks if you can install them all yourself

Hi all,

I've only done handling mods to my car so far, just read my sig. Really makes the car so much grippier in the wet, as I found on the way home tonight. Gone are the days I can just thump the auto from a set of lights (downhill even) and spin the wheels all the way to 2nd gear at 60kph. Both wheels tend to grip by 3000rpm now... Next year I may lower with an Eibach 35mm drop?
At the moment I've got some cosmetic things on the brew, only because I was at the right place at the right time, the right time drawing out some 2 months now! But when I have my bits and pieces and get the car back from the bodyshop it will be $$$ well spent.
I'm not planning anything mechanical at this stage, otherwise it will be wasted for when the turbo comes along late next year.

Gav.

I like the flames idea, It'd be a bit avant-guard and Sunburst Yellow would pull it of well.
Do the suspension first and you won't go faster but you will be able to carry more speed through corners.

Think about how much you love to drive your car, when you're in the drivers seat what are you going to get any benefit from? :?
I would follow the advice from my fellow suspension promoters as you will always find a corner at the stat and end of any straight road, plus you will find that your rainy day drives are far more pleasing. And if you look at the situation from a safety aspect, Suspension is the first step to improving your braking as it will really limit the weight transfer from both ends of your car which as a bonus will help acceleration times as well as the travel in the suspension is a nasty drain on your front wheel power.
Just food for thought

Aaaarghh! Thanks to everyone..... now I not only have to think about engine or body(looks) mods but also suspension. sheesh.

The wife doesnt want the car to go any lower, though I could consider Twighlights recommendations, though the chip is an exciting prospect to wring every kw out.

I forgot to mention that i have CAI through mods to the front air intake into a K&N Panel filter.

As the car is a 3 days a week drive at present (the other 4 days, my wifes Jazz is the go....slow....ugh) I really miss it on the days off, especially the exhaust note when revving through to limit and quick gearchange etc...

I am hoping to put up photos this weekend on readers ride as I've just got a digital camera that could have paid for some of the mods...but then again it's a tax write off for the missus. If only i could use my car as a tax writeoff.... pizza anyone ?

thanks again, check out the pics when they get posted and I'll let you know before Xmas what I end up going for.

if you dont want to lower the car, you could still get the sway bars to help out handling and up your brakes with slotted replacement rotors and better pads etc.

just dont forget you'll be going lots faster now - you'll need to stop and corner faster too!

well i personally before i got suspension would be getting a mazdaspeed lsd for the puppy.... stops understeer, helps with traction, launches.... and costs US$500
just give the dealership at http://www.mazdaformance.com/ an email and they'll fix you up....
apart from that i wouldn't get a unichip, everyone i know who has got one and moved on the better and brighter things has ended up with a pricey paper weight... i would try another type of cheap full ECU like an EAGLE or a microtech .... hey it maybe cheap but its a full aftermarket fuel and iginition system as apposed to a wanna be fuel management unit, better value for money in the long term...
