SP20 Gearbox issue

Hi,

3rd gear just gave up on me today =[

So how long do you guys think I can drive without the 3rd gear ( go 1st, 2nd then 4th), that's what I did today driving back home.

Where can I get stronger gearset? Where and who can do that for me? (Sydney)

I'm going to V&E tomorrow to ask.

To be honest don't really have the money at the moment to do the gearbox, so what do you guys think I should do?

Oh the car is doing about 200kws.

Thanks
Rob.

no money? just replace the gearbox with one from the wreckers and drive the car gently

you can get PAR gears, but they're stupid expensive

When your making power the box can't handle you have a few options... Save and get a par or strengthend gearset or keep rebuilding/replacing boxes which in the end may add up to the cost of a par set.

Get a PAR straight-cut 3rd gear.

Or Albins do them as well from memory.

If you don't have the cash, just drop a standard box back in as they're cheap, and build up your other one with good stuff as a backup.

Gearbox cooler + GTX 3rd gear will buy you sometime. Just don't abuse it

Thanks for the replies guys.

I spoke to someone from PAR and he said it will cost me about 3.7k and about 10 weeks if I'm lucky (which I'm not).

So going to get a 2nd hand box and put it in for now and save up for something good.

Does anyone know where I can get GTX gears, I've seen people do 10s (450+ whp) with them, don't know if that's true tho, I mean with GTX gears.

Or anything good that I can use other than PAR?

Thanks a lot guys.

Just use the PAR 3rd gear - it's about $700-900 from memory. Put it in your standard box - plenty of people have done just 3rd and it's fine.

Ok, that doesn't sound too bad.

The car spins in 1st and 2nd if I just give it a bit anyways, but don't know how the 2nd gear will hold with semi slicks.

I really don't know what to do, but I guess that all depends on how much money I have.

Whats the gearbox model number in the 2002 SP20 and is there any other gearbox that fits (stronger)?

And what other gear sets I can use?

Thanks a lot...

Quaife in the UK make a sequential box, but it's drug money.

Your current gearbox is a G Series box.

If you're really serious, you can use an adapter with a Toyota box that you won't break anytime soon. Probably less than the PAR option.

The Mazda cases are (relatively) weak, and that can't really be overcome.

You can break it with a N/A motor.

You can break Toyota box with enough abuse too. It just takes more.

Semi- slicks with weaken the secondary shaft and ring gear on the diff- LSD or not but.

1st weak points are diff - if abused at low speed and cornering - 3rd gear because it's too tall to spin. secondary drive to ring gear. About this time as well depending on abuse type and clutch setup- case etc. If you set up right you don't even need slicks and you can break the driveshafts if the clutch is too strong and dropped enough.

200Wheel KW's from V&E is still safe for a G-series if driven right - it only needs a 3rd gear and LSD - with full face clutch and stronger clamp. Any puck or segmented anything unsprung will break the box quicker.

Plenty of 2nd hand units around. Swap it out and build up the other one.
