has anyone looked into an mps engine into a bj?

hey guys
on another forum i was asked if an engine from a mazda 3 mps would fit into my laser. does anyone know if its beeen done yet?
a member on the forum said he can get an engine for 8500.
but with 190kw stock it would definately improve the lasers power issues!

this question gets asked at least once a year on this forum.

it would fit with alot of time and money put into it.

be cheaper to turbo a FS-DE and slap that in.

The biggest issue is mounting angles

I even thought about it for my Mx-6 - lighter car (by 50KG ) but whole reason it's hard is

Nose angle - you have less room With einges intake at front and turbo rear plenty of rear room but if you nose slopes too far forward down it means the front half will stick up.

I did a physical test with a SP23 engine into a BG SOHC.
bonnet bulge and half.

it's great idea but measuring tapes required.
Plus you have the problem of running the engine with out a body control module. Car talks too much to the engine.
aftermakret ECU power to run direct injection requres M800 motec.

Rod - did you notice by chance just how similar the engine mount locations are as well?

First time I had a good look at the MPS bay I realised that the basic fundamentals are all there (bonnet clearance and ECU issues aside) to make the conversion relatively straight forward...

Probably will become a swap in the future as MZRs etc get cheaper.

The gearshift linkages are hella different though - they're on top of the box IIRC. But nothing a few rosejoints can't fix heh

Itd be cheaper to grab the MSP bits n pieces from someone who is getting rid of the gear and bolt it on assuming you have FS-DE or FP-DE.

Thered be a few issues to deal with but i can think of anything major.

Your engine loves boost, but your gearbox does not. But if you have good boost control and a restrained and controlled right ankle, you should be fine. I guess you've checked out the HiBoost kit for your engine by now?

yeah i have looked at highboost's kits. looks good, but atm im unsure what is the best back for my buck...
as i can turbo the 1.6 and work from there
or spend the money on 2.0l conversion (if i did i would by the motor and do the internals and try to build a strong and hopefully good engine slowly, before putting it in)
or look into another completely different conversion....

i dont wanna sell the car as i have come so far with it from when i bought it, but im at a bit of a crossroad as to what i should do...

How much time do you spend with your foot glued to the floor? I mean, are you ever going to do any actual racing or competition type stuff?

I'd turbo the 1.6 over swapping to the 2L - to get any kind of decent performance out of the 2L you're either going to be spending a huge wad of cash on 2L bolt ons (and even then, you'd be lucky to see 150whp) - or turbo that engine instead...lots of money

Sure the 2L will make more power for the same level of boost - but the 1.6 is lighter, so the trade off is power vs power to weight ... and small displacement turbo engines are simply awesome fun (ask Chicaboo what he thinks... or go ask anyone who owns a turbo Starlet, or a turbo suzuki swift...they love the tiny engines with turbos....)

Of course, if you simply want performance without the price tag, you're probably better off buying a better platform to begin with - but if you love the laser so much that you can't bring yourself to sell it, then go crazy i say!

save yourself the headache, stick with what you've got and drop the bolt on hiboost turbo kit onto it....

Seconded, I'd just turbo the 1.6 you've got. But I'd wait 'til it needs rebuilding first, to make it more cost-effective.

Put it this way, your friend said he can get a motor for $8500, and then you would need to bank atleast another $2500 for ECU and boost control, and then you have the problem that that motor is death on wheels for your little car. A turbo kit or custom job would prolly cost around $6k done properly, and you're still under budget.

Lordworm refers to my KE TX3 Turbo with a B6T (1.6T). An awesome little machine, mine is currently on it's way to 130kW ATW, which is nice in a small package like that. Even when it only had 100kW at the crank (stock), it was good for a mid 15 second pass I would guess.

buy a slower car for really cheap.

drive it for a week.

then drive the Laser again.

result = Laser feels fast.

Well, I think it's the only real kit for your car. My only gripe with that kit is that the air intake for the turbo faces the right side of the car. Whereas it would be nicer if it was facing the left side of the car (for cold air and space atleast).

Thats a rather minor problem..nothing the intercooler wont be able to handle i wouldn't imagine...still you're right, it would be nicer the other way

KQ: i'd go with teh hiboost kit because its a complete kit - gives you a solid grounding for future modification, rather than trying to piece together a kit yourself and hacking at it piecemeal which will leave the car down for a longer period of time.

Once the hiboost kit is on board, you could just progressively upgrade it. Plenty of people in the states run hiboost kits on the 1.8 and 2L, and use them as a good foundation for future modifications. I'd go that way - not because its the best way to get the most out of the engine, but because you can rest assured that you get everything you need to get the car rolling again.....my 2cents...*shrug*
