Protege vs Astina
If you are considering BA models, what are the differences (other than looks) between an Astina and the 1.8l Protege?
Are there major differences in suspension/interior/weight or is it mainly the same vehicle in a different body shape? Is it a different motor? I've seen some specs that indicate it is not the same 1.8l as in the Astina and others that say it is. Last edited by Coco; 07-02-2006 at 06:03 PM. |

Protoge is the sedan version, mechanicly the same with either the 1.6 0r 1.8 four banger but had A/C optional, the base model the climate controls are mechanical not push button electronic.
You could have optioned a Protege almost upto Astina but then you would have still and a Protege.

No no back then the protege was a sedan but a different model altogether....the Astina was the curvy shape and a different car altogether...and also both hatch and sedan. Just to confuse people Mazda then started calling the BJ series hatchs Astina and the sedans Proteges. technically the BA Protege was the new model but seems to have only ever come out as a sedan here, and the BA Astina came from the Eunos side of Mazda as really a sister line. well there was a model called the BA protege here but it really was a BH. Talk about confusing....the Lynx if you look at that link..was again another line..that used bits of the lantis/Astina. You can see mazda getting pulled different directions in 1994 by effectively making 3 new lines of 323 and using them all.

ok,
BA/BHA/BH Protege = japanese Familia (depends who you talk to as to where it's BA/BHA etc) BA Astina Hatch/Hardtop= japanese Lantis Coupe/Sedan In Japan, both the Lantis were also sold as Eunos 100 (as was the BG) with a different trim spec but not much else afaik Auto or Manual, Hardtop was slightly dearer We got a 1.6 DOHC and 1.8 DOHC Protege (same engine as the BA Astina 1.8) Suspension etc is much the same - as is the Eunos 30X which is on the same platform

was full of hardtops and getting a manual hatch was a 1 month wait. Also trying to get a Noble Green was almost impossible I was told there were 10 on the boat then my dealer didn't get any and wanted to sell me white. I had to call 5 dealers in sydney to find one and then get my dealer to go get it. I got a very good trade in on my commodore and it actually ran out of rego whilst I was waiting so I gave it to them and really couldn't go elsewhere. I still got pictures of it the day I got it home. Hubcaps, 4wd high looks a crackup..

Hmmm ... obviously not a straight forward answer.
I really would prefer an Astina but there are a few Proteges with the 1.8l. I'm just thinking that perhaps I should at least consider one. Looks like my only option is to try to get one and go for a drive. See what differences I can feel between the two. Thnx all. |

And now for my totally uneducated point of view: The BAH Protegé looks too much like a Laser. If it's a facelifted Laser, chances are the Astina and Hardtop have a better interior if the BJs are anything to go by...?
Just noticed you are in Hobart, my dad lives in Franklin and owns the Festiville IGA in Huonville. Go buy lots of stuff from him, it'll make him happy! There are some great twisties down near Geevestown on the way to Dover. I also liked the drive on the way to the Tahoon air walk (I think it's called that?). I could easily place myself in Blackmans Bay or Kingston one day. When I was in Hobart, I don't think I ever saw anything but BG hatches and BA Protegés... Oh, it was prolly the same two guys all the time! Cheers, Gav. |

Personally I would go the Astina for sure, Protégé don’t have the same styling and already look older, who wants an older car that looks old, better an older car that looks half its age, .: better resale.
Gotta consider the fuel, servicing and the limited cheap performance upgrades on the V6. But if your going to go all out I think the V6 Hardtop is the one, hardtop due to extra engine room (not much but). eg KLZE 200hp in a V6 is roughly the same cost as a BPT installed (I think, anyone say otherwise???). Also if you not going to mod it again V6 is the one you get dual airbags, mags, start off 1”lower, ABS, fogies, dual exhaust and the price differential is pretty small compared to the like $8000 when new. And they sure are fun, |
