Cruching changing gears
Hi All
i Seem to have developed a crunching sound when changing friom 1st to 2nd, and it doesnt happen all the time, so i cant pinpoint the exact cause. The car has only done 74k. Any suggestions?? |

mine does this too. it started out when i would shift after redlining first but now it does it at completely random times. my theory is that my synchro's r rooted. but mine has done nearly 140k, so it may not apply to ur situation

Gearbox oil change is at 80k, has this been done yet?
If not change the oil and give that a shot. If oil has been changed then the synco sleave is sliding over the sycro ring and hiting 2nd gear cluster (crunching) Its pretty standard for this to happen in a manual gearbox as the design itself is flawed because of this exact reason. All u can do is keep driving and not race change so much, remember the gearboxs in standard cars are not designed for race changes even though u can get away with it 90% of the time. If its crunching every time u will need a new syncro ring and possibly a new 2nd gear cluster. |

your clutch linkage may just be in need of an adjustment. If the clutch engages very close to the floor it may not be releasing fully making the changes a bit crunchy. U adjust the pickup point in the footwell, worth trying cos 75k seems early for synchros to go. see this thread for details http://www.astinagt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5671

If you have to ask how to do it then get it done at our next service. Don't rush the gears until you have the new fluid.

If it's under warranty, take it to Mazda.
Mine was crunching from 2nd to 3rd. I got some 3rd party mechanics to have a look and they said it was the synchros. I called mazda and they stripped/rebuilt the box all under warranty. Problem is fixed and gear changes are smooth as. I got an extra year warranty thrown in when I bought my car so I was lucky. |

First words from Mazda when I asked them to look at my gearbox/cutch about crunching was: "the clutch is a serviceable item..." FAR QUEUE MAZDA!

I have to think that it is the synchro's as I have 72K's and just had the gearbox oil changed last service (without my knowledge, thanks ultratune!) and it still does it occasionally when I race into second.
sounds a bit like gear crunch, but much slower sound, if that makes sense and not as loud. definately can feel it through the stick though.
