help needed: no clutch pedal + smoke from engine bay (BJ 1.6)
just happened half an hour ago (i came back from a 600km drive) ...
i pressed the clutch pedal but i got no pressure at all (then of course i couldn't get any gear in or out) .. this happened twice within 20minutes.. as soon as i turned the engine off and restarted, i had some pressure on the clutch, but clutch pressure and brake felt a little "smudgy". and i thought i smelled something strange, popped the hood, saw some strange smoke coming from somewhere between under the exhaust manifold and the radiator... help? |

You might have a leak in the hydraulic clutch line that goes to your gear box that actuates the clutch. Look for any leaking fluid around the bell housing of your gearbox. Maybe it only leaks when it gets warm, but when you switched off the engine it may have cooled a little and you got some pressure back. Also check the level of clutch/brake fluid in the reservoir.

i remember i already had somethng like this about 3 years ago:
the brake light was lighting up permanently and my clutch failed on me and the brake liquid got less... they had to replace some hydraulic cylinder because it had a hairline crack... a production failure they said... i looked at the brake liquid level yesterday and it seemed alright with me.. no brake light either... damn, if it's that stupid cylinder again, this is going to be costly.. and if the clutch is squashed,it will get even more expensive. |

i'd say you've got a split in the clutch line, and it's spraying brake fluid onto your exhaust manifold.
As if the smoke is coming from the manifold that's the most likely case to my thinking - as the slave cylinder is right near the exhaust. Or the bleed valve on the slave cylinder isn't tightened properly.

slave cylinder would be my guess...
they are pretty cheap too but the brake fluid should be empty... damn 1.6 BJ.... grrr
