BG Astina Turbo Conversion
just wondering if anyone on this forum has done this conversion succesfully? would a GTX engine drop in, and does anyone know if the engine mounts need to be changed, or if it is able to use the standard mounts?
thanks, chris

Cheers matey, I've meet a few of you from off fordlaser.com, but will hopefully get to meet many more now that I'm on the both sides of the fence.
Jynx, I've just swapped the turbo off the Laser and put it back to stock. This motor I have in is just about stuffed, it's got S@#TLOADS of blowby. In the process of sourcing another motor. NOTE - This is not the motor that was in FNZOOM, it was blown up a long time ago. This was a spare head and block I got with the car...Paul and I were both told it was good, hence the reason he gave it to me with the car.

Yeah I remeber Paul posting about his lost piston through the sump. Bugger about the motor. Could be good for parts

Hey guys
Just thought I'd ask a few questions here instead of starting a new thread. As you may have read, and gathered, I am interested in putting a BP turbo in my BG. I need to know all the pros and cons of doing it all and expenses also. You may be sick of answering this but if all the info's here people might stop asking I would like to know whats the better buy, I got a few quotes: "We have the conversions here $2500, use your own gearbox. Only FWD "turbo" box avaliable is a BP DOHC LSD box with driveshafts $1350. Freight $200 Regards Bob Adelaide Jap Imports" and "I have in stock BP Turbo manual 1/2 cut for $2,400 Freight approx $650 All engines are fully tested with 3 months warranty. Darren Rolin Automotive Imports" What do ya's reckon? Also whats the go with gearboxes always blowin in the turbos, anyway around it? I have a single cam Astina, still a straight forward conversion? Again sorry for the hastle, and thanks heaps hey...I appreciate it. Adam (I know I have addressed this a few times, sorry bout that)

Adelaide Jap have a FWD LSD box avaliable... oooooooooo
Pros and Cons of turboing a car.... Pros - Turbo - Turbo - Turbo - Pssssssht! Cons - Gearbox problems - Tend to loose fuel economy due to right foot syndrome - Repairs generally cost alot more to fix depending on what has gone wrong >>We have the conversions here $2500, use your own gearbox This statment is a bit ambiguous.... are they offering you a halfcut for $2500? or to actually do the conversion for $2500. If the later, thats pretty cheap. Place in Sydney, ForMaz, does a full conversion for around $5K depending on what needs to be done. Considering a motor alone cost ~$1000, a $2500 conversion aint giving you much more then remove/replace. You should, at minimum, replace all the belts, fluids, filters. "I have in stock BP Turbo manual 1/2 cut for $2,400 Freight approx $650 All engines are fully tested with 3 months warranty." Thats about the same as what I paid. The disadvantage you have is that you cant look at the motor. Your placing alot of trust in the company to send you a good halfcut and I rekon they will send you the crapest one on the lot... I would want to at least know the compression in the cylinders before sending money over. >>Also whats the go with gearboxes always blowin in the turbos, anyway around it There is quite a big torque increase so you expect additional strain on the gearbox. They just arnt designed to handle the torque levels. The FWD LSD box is interesting. There is debate wether they are actual stronger as such, but LSD would be nice. I think its from an Infinity or somthing like that. Most people run a full face organic clutch plate to try and let the clutch slip prior to the gearbox giving way. This is only an attempt at reducing the problem and is not a "fix". There are plenty of ideas being thrown around about how to make the gearboxes stronger. The 4 spider Diff and the Bearing mods seem to be the better ones. >>I have a single cam Astina, still a straight forward conversion? Its straight forward for the DOHC version, not sure about SOHC. The engine and gearbox mounts will be the make or break for you I think.

The $2500 from Adelaide Jap wouldn't be a fitted conversion. Sounds like the price of a front cut suitable for a conversion, but they don't supply a gearbox. If you can get a cut like the one from Rolin in QLD, it's a bit of a bonus that you get the box...even though you won't have a use for it, you can use it as a bartering tool to upgrade to a DOHC box, shafts and mounts. The DOHC box has different ratio's and a bigger diff to that of a SOCH box currently in your car. If you are pretty easy on your car (ie, driving style isn't like a bat out of hell), you should be fine with the SOHC box, and therefore you will only hve to change clutch as I said.

Why pay $500 to $600 for a turbo and manifold when you can have the whole
motor including correct pistons, intake, injectors etc etc for a little over $1000. We all start thinking of keeping the stock motor I did as my motor only had 53k on it but buying the gtx motor ended up being by far the cheaper solution. Mal

I did the conversion using the standard bp motor but from
the begining i used a bigger turbo which i would of needed to make a new manifold, and need all the rest of the goodies, injectors pistons etc, only thing i used from a gtx motor was the intake manifold and the flywheel and presure plate. |

Turbo,
You want to throw a $$ amount on that so people can see the difference in price. |
