Clutch goes to floor
Hi guys,
As the topic suggests, my girlfriend got stuck on Saturday driving the car. Stopped at the lights and suddenly the clutch now goes straight to the floor with no back pressure other than the spring in the pedal. Clutch doesn't disengage from the engine, moving gear lever crunches gearbox. Its now at the mechanics but in the lead up to Christmas they're fully booked out so won't get to it until later this week. So what do you think is the problem? Current theories include: Clutch plate - not likely though possible Clutch thrust bearing Pressure plate fingers broken - no rattles when car is running so doubtful broken Clutch Cable Broken Hydraulic seals in clutch mechanism Empty clutch fluid I'm leaning towards the last three but now that I've dropped the car off, its a bit difficult to tell. I feel dumb that I didn't check these before I dropped it off, just thought that it was the clutch and that was that. Meh, we'll see I guess.

I'd be cheaking the flud first (shared resevour with the brakes) then look for leaks where the master goes through the fire wall (both sides) and the slave cylendar on the bell housing. Next I'd inspect the clutch fork and if that's all OK then your car is at the best place.

ye, i got my money on the last three as well.
since there is just the spring in the cluch-pedal, it soundss like its functioning, it just has no fluid to push... or, the fluid runs straight through the head=damaged seals.... grim

Dont forget to check the clutch flexi line to the bellhousing as even the tiniest pinhole can result in no pedal and usually theres no stone guard directly under the line so you may need to wrap a paper towel around it and check for fluid that way. Fluid on my BA starts to draw in air when its still above the full mark on the reservior, it seems that youve only really got mm"s to work with so you may need to overfill it even if it looks fulland you can always bleed some back out if thats not the case but play it safe and check all simple avenues first. It only took one straw to break the camels back

Yep, my mate had the same prob, it was the clutch cable, but i would check the other stuff you mentioned(where possible).

i would say clutch slave cylinder, which is the cheap fix too.... have a look on the ground... if you see brake/clutch fluid then your prolly leaking it out... now you just have to locate where from!!!!
app $25 for a clutch slave cylinder kit...

I hope for your sake it isn't a clutch cable. You shouldn't have one :P

Does the pedal move back at all or is it quite firmly staying 'on the floor'? I'm not sure about your particualr model but most clutch pedals have a spring that will keep the pedal down on the floor if there is nothing to 'pull' it back. Things such as a broken cable or a rod pin/mount in a hydraulic setup can show up like this. I've had it in both an older telstar and a cortina before.

sounds like a hydraulic problem to me, or a broken clutch fork.
easiest way to find out would be to watch the clutch mechanism at the gearbox end while someone presses the pedal, but seeing as you don`t have the car........ :? |

Thanks all, will try and drop by the mechanics today and have a peek. They shouldn't mind if I have a look considering they're probably not looking at it yet.
There's a spring on the pedal that pulls it back up to normal position - I think in older cars that actually had cables they might have relied on the cable pulling the pedal up which is why in the older cars that chipa mentioned the pedal stayed on the floor. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a fluid problem though the brakes seem to work fine. I'd say there's a leak in a pipe/tube somewhere that has gradually drained the fluid reservoir. Since there is still fluid in the brake lines, they still work but the leak is between the reservoir and the clutch actuator. I didn't see much fluid anywhere on the engine when I had a look, but it was getting dark and I was more interested in getting it home and not leaving it on the side of the road. Thanks for everyone's help, I'll let you know how I get on.

Well they're 98% convinced that the mechanisms for the clutch are fine and that its a hydraulic problem somewhere between the pedal and the slave cylinder - They're just trying to find out where.
All bets are off, and dividends can now be paid. Thanks all

They've overhauled both slave and master cylinders and they seemed to be ok but the main culprit seems to be a bleed in the flexible line from the slave cylinder to hard line running on the chassis. Hopefully get it back this afternoon! 8)
