ever had your plates flogged??
Found my ride had been de-plated on saturday night (few weeks back).
Front plate had been ripped clean off and pulled the plastic blocks out. The rear plate was bent out of all proportion, they couldnt get it off obviously. Lucky the replacement plates were only $51 which was alot less than what I expected (they are personalised plates). I got pulled over by the cops today, lucky I showed them the stolen police report note, copper said he would've booked me otherwise. Is there any kind of anti-theft coverplate ppl use? These pr*cks didnt even need a screwdriver, just pulled it straight off! |

Bad news
Same thing happened to a friend once. I'd chalk that one down to bad luck, go and kick a cat (it'll make you feel better) and get on with life.

I thought you had to change to a new number plate cmnbination if they got stolen in case the plates are used for speeding, crime, etc on a similar car?

Hard luck mate, $51 better spent elsewhere but at least physical damage was minimal. As for protective covers, not much you can really do. Perhaps use hex screws on the plates (more often then not I would have thought people would unscrew them rather then rip them off). |

yeah I was going to put snake head screws or similar that cant be removed with a standard tool. but still if they wanna rip them off theres nothing you can do so beware....
I'm not sure about standard numberplate combinations but personalised yeah they just replace them. When you report it to the cops they have record that the plate has been stolen, so if they found it on someone elses car it would be discovered pretty quick they had nipped it. Conversely if its on my car they know I'm the correct owner. but yeah a bit more lucky than sorry, just glad the car wasnt damaged. |

I am amazed at what some people will do....
I just read about a guy on another forum that parked his car outside last night because he got home late and didn't want to wake anyone with his loud 'zorst.. this morning he woke up and his Mazda 6 was badly egged! And then I read about HI-RES's plates.... What the f@(k is the world coming to??? |

You could always electrofy the plate somehow - that way they get a nasty zap when they try and grab it.
That's pretty tight though... stealing people's number plates. Some people must really have no life. :?

^^ haha i love it!!!!
but on that note, you can wire through to your alarm... working on the theory that the plate will conduct electricity.... dunno how to do this, or how effective it would be, but certainly worth a try!!! aaron the elctro man could probably inform us.... i can't think how, without flattening the battery!!! relay is the only thing in my mind.... positive flow to open the relay, when the relay collapses, the alarm will get its required negative signal.... but like i said can't think how to do without making the battery flat.... note that fog lights can also be integrated into an alarm system to alarm if nicked.... once again clueless is i

You could sit a plunger switch behind the plates so it pops out if the plate is removed. You would need another input or shared input to your alarm. If I brushed past a car and were zapped I'd be a little anoyed and you'd know about it when you saw your car.

hehe, good point Cosmo.
I like the idea of a plunger switch though. Kinda like the ones on the doors connected to the interior light. It would only stop them from stealing one plate however as the alarm would sound after they'd already ripped the plate off. Maybe an array of thumbtacks attached to the back of the plate? When they put their hand around the back to peel off the plate 'yowchie' Then again, that'd probably lead to dented guards and broken headlights etc. :?
