Help locating Sump Plug
I'm planning to do my first engine oil change and was hoping that someone could tell me where the oil sump plug is located on a 1995 Mazda 323 Astina BA, a photo would be really appreciated! Apart form the list below is there anything else I should purchase? do I need all these?
• Oil Filter • New Sump Plug Washer • Oil • Oil Filter Tool • 17mm Socket • Old Rags / Cardboard • Gloves • Old Bowl / Oil Container • Jack and Axle Stands Sorry for the really simple question, but really if they bothered to teach people about basic car maintenance in school we wouldn't need to ask silly questions. Thanks All. |

1st, welcome to the forums.
Do you have the 4 of the v6? That should help the BA owners help you. Otherwise, Do you know what part of the engine the sump is? If so, look for a bolt either near the middle of the sump or on the corner of the bottom and one of the sides..

you may have to take off the mud guards/plastics from under the engine if you want to do it properly. otherwise the oil filter is a V18 in valvoline for the V6 astina. Replace washer if its worn out, yer cardboard under car unless u want oil on garage floor. easy way to do it is on ramps but yer jack and axle stands will do the trick. If you have the V6 i recomend using Penrite HPR10 oil, you may aswell replace air filter while ur there and fuel filter. also use some additives like NULON or STP or FLASH LUBE to clean out your fuel system and so on.. that way you will have 1 smooth running engine..

Don't have to remove plastic thingys, I never have.
Just get on your arse and have a looksie not too well hidden. if your not going to get a new air filter give it a gentle whack then a vacum on the dirty side. Oh yeah wait 15-20 mins for oil to cool down after a decent drive that way heated smooth flowing oil but will-not burn the crap outa ya hand when it splashes all over it. |

The 1.8 plug is on the drivers side facing the rear, put your oil pan back a little bit or oil may squirt out beyond the rim. I normaly do the job on ramps (well the car is normaly on ramps, not me) just to make it a little easier.
You shouldn't need to replace the copper washer every oil change.

a funnell would be a good idea unless you're really good at pouring stuff out of a bottle

Thanks for the welcome chipa, the BA is 1.8L. Thanks to everyone else for their input, I got the bits and pieces I need today and I'll give the car it's oil change as soon as a can. Probably should have bought the ramp instead of the axle stands now that I think about it. Hope it works out, anyone else really sick of paying the rip off prices for a oil change and basic service? Mazda charged me over $300 a bit over one year ago.

Ramps are good for jobs that don't require the removal of wheels while stands are for when you need to remove wheels.

I just drive the passenger side up onto the gutter.
Takes 10 seconds and leans the sump towards the plug, plenty of room under there. |

Depending on your car and if you're lowered. My SP20 won't go on ramps and its only lowered 30mm or so with the King lows. The only way I can use ramps is if I use some wood to 'extend' the ramp so the angle is a bit more shallow.

yer same i still use ramps but since i lowered it 30mm it wont go up without really scratching. My garage is flat concrete but the driveway rite to it is slanted so the ramps are only at a 10-15 degree angle as the bottom sits on the slant makin it easy to get car up with heaps of room.. :P good luck with the change. i had a smell of my oil on the dipstick 2day and by the smell i think i need to change mine 2.. any1 ever used a PUREONE filter???

The wood thing is what i usually have to use. Oh, and if the oil filter is on too tight and the oil filter wrench wont loosen it, try stabbing it with a screwdriver. Messy, but it does the job.

I usually have to lift the front end of the car and then push the trolley jack under with my foot |

A slight addtion to this thread which some people may find useful.
1) For Ryco brand oil filters, the part number is Z436 2) Sump plug washer is around 18mm 3) The oil filter is at the back of the engine. I found it easier to take off the front driver side wheel and stick my arm up to undo it. |

Oh, and make sure you wrap plenty of newspaper around the exhaust where the oil will drain through, you don't want to get a drop of oil on there and have you car smelling like burning oil!
