Obd ii
Hi,
Looking at checking for problems with OBD and having a bit of a play around. what do I need to connect the car to the computer and what software will work with it? I think the BJ2 J48 SP20s have OBD II but not too sure... Cheers. Last edited by mynameisdaniel; 09-05-2010 at 07:38 PM. |

Hey Daniel,
All SP20's have an OBDII connection, which is beside the bonnet pull. Most mechanic workshops should have a OBD code reader... What kind of playing around are you looking at doing, just clearing CEL codes? if so, I'd suggest buying a scangauge II, clears codes and shows 4 different gauges at the same time

those scanguages are about $200 aren't they? was looking more at a pc solution with a $20 cable lol. haven't heard of CEL codes before... |

You could try something like this:

Yeah that's the kinda thing I've been looking at. Any idea which protocol our cars use? otherwise i'll just go with a universal one.

The one that I linked up seemed to cover a few of the protocols. I'm sure one of myself, Marc or Mat can have a look at it and give you the answer in the next few days.

A laptop isn't very handy for instantaneous fuel consumption. Whereas the Scangage will give you real time and average fuel consumption readings, and I think even DTE? A laptop is great for tuning, but much else really. But if you get a carputer, I suppose you might be able to rig up digital gauges to a 7" screen or something...

yeah that's what I'm aiming for, once I'm finished and happy with the car I'm going to put together a carputer, just wanted to see if a pc can pull any useful info.
Might be a while before the carputer's done though need an amp first |

Most mazdas run with the CAN protocol, I too thought about running something similiar with a carputer, but for $200 for the scangauge, it does all that I need, and its directly in my line of sight so I can see whats happening straight away
Oh and answering the question about CEL's, CEL stands for Check Engine Light, located on the left hand side of the gauges, when you see it flash or stay on, there is a problem

Cheers. Never seen the CEL come on so i guess I'm in the clear
Carputer is more to have a all in one unit, GPS, Bluetooth etc as it works out cheaper than a pioneer/kenwood equivalent device |
