I was hopign to get some feedback from other SP20 owners on the tyre wear. I managed 30,000kms on the Yokohama Advans am now 8,000kms into my Federal S901's. So far the grip around corners isnt as good as the Yokohamas but then again the little wheel slip that happens goes well when the grip takes hold as it really pulls the car into line. The Federals are quieter and so far look like they'll last around the 30,000kms as well.
The only difference with both tyres (both look good) is the price. I got quoted $220 a tyre for the Yokos and $120 a tyre for the Feds.

Anyone care to contribute.....? ???[/colorost_uid1]

I have been using the Falken tyres now for 5 years now
as everything else in 17" or 18" are too pricey. Not saying
$250 a tyre for the 18"s aren't too pricey either.
I found the Ziex lasted longer with only a marginal loss in
handling and I am the late braking, hard cornering type.
Just ask anybody who has been in my car... Sorry Leanne
for last weekend, *that 140+ stuff and the no brake cornering
wont happen again

Hope this helps

adelaidesp20,

i have just gone over 19,000, and at the moment, there still is a fair bit of tread left... when the front tires get low, i'll swap them over with the rears... but yeah, when all four tyres are ready to be replaced, i'll just opt for aftermarket wheels and tyres.
if i get under 30k from my tyres, i will not be happy!!!

yoki's rock..i had them on my old car, excellent handling and brake performance...but they don't make the A509's like they previously did.

a couple of issues ago in Motor magazine, they had an absolutely awesome tyre performance test....they have it every year... but from memory, the feds got the lowest ratings on all fronts... kumho's went well though... i'll get back to you with more info

cheers,

bill[/colorost_uid0]

Mal,

What rubber where u running on these 17s prior to the 18s? Looking to replace the 2 rears and rotate the fronts to the rear so starting to do a bit of homework, window shopping etc.

Cheers[/colorost_uid0]

The baldy ones were the front tyres. The other ones were
test tyres to try and reduce wheel spin which they did but
aren't as good for handling so do make a better rear tyre.
The fronts are GRb's but would recomend the Ziex 502's for
better wear.

Regards

Mal[/colorost_uid1]

I didn't notice you had joined... yeah, 20kms.. i'm touching 20kms and i have plenty left of the front (over 80%) and the rears don't get much wear on the fwd's...

I tried to go to your url, but the addy is not working...
Which area are you from?
Did the guards need much attention after putting the 18's on?

cheers,

Bill[/colorost_uid0]

Yeah i used the Goodyear F1"s on my 17inch wheels and they were great. 2 years i had them on for, and they all still had 85% tread left on them when i sold them
I highly recomend them [/colorost_uid14]

i've only heard average reports on the F1s. a mate had them on his WRX and they used to squeal and weren't that grippy at all. but they lasted well, i guess because they're a hard compound[/colorost_uid0]

A mate of mine was telling me about a survey done on tyres that was done not long ago,and they came out on top oh well each to there own,i found that the wearing factor was great, grip in the dry was excellent, didnt think to much of them in the wet though As for the squealling i never had any
Maybe the squeals were coming from his passengers in fright of his driving style [/colorost_uid0]

The F1s are only an extra $9 per tyre. The guy at the tyre centre didnt seem too impressed with falkens, said they were cheap tyres, reckoned the F1s were better. He could have had excess stock as I know the F1s are not produced any more, replace with a new model tyre.[/colorost_uid0]

I got 32,000km from the original tyres. They were still ok even when I replaced them and could do another 2000-3000 easily. Now I went for Yokohama A539 205/45 R16 and they are just unreal. Much better than the stock tyres.

I also roadtested Vredestein Sportrac, originally Bob Jane (Epping, Victoria) advised me that they would be the best for my car and said that if I am not happy, I can return them. I had them on for about a week and they were just too slippery on the SP20 during cornering and braking. Even with ABS, the tyres screeched on tarmac when braking. The Yokohamas are much better. I wouldnt get anything else.

Oh yeah, they look pretty cool too.

If you get a chance, fill them up with Nitro, Bob Jane offer it at $5.50 per wheel.[/colorost_uid0]

my old man had those yokohamas A539's on his EL Falcon (we no longer have it) in 215/60R 15's

he got 35,000kms out of them and they were the best tyre i have driven with, plenty of grip in the wet and the dry.

i read a review in a magazine on them and they said why they r so good is to do with the criss-cross grid in the middle which also looks pretty cool as well

werent that expensive 4 a sports tyre and lasted well

i would defiently reccomend them as well

cheers

Bill - No mods on my car yet. I'm saving up the money and will get a turbo conversion in the future. Probably towards the end of the year. I just need to save about $10K. I want to do the brakes too while I get the turbo installed. I figure, if I can go faster, I need to stop faster too.

From what people are saying, its pretty difficult to modify an Astina and get away with it. Most people have had some problems with the engines not being strong enough. I wonder what work the dealers (or whoever did it for them) needed to do to turbo the MX-5. They have reliability all sorted out while the performance is just amazing.

Yeah, one day I'll come along to the cruises in Melbourne.[/colorost_uid3]
