so i assume its a pretty involved process to take the manifold off and do a DIY job of this? mazda seem to want a fair bit of time to do the repair...

i dunno about "if it hasnt happened by now it wont happen" my line of thinking is that if it hasnt happend, theres more chance it will as it gets older!

i wonder about the chances of my car having already passed a screw at some point in the last 7 years without the previous owner (my mum) knowing! hence damaging a valve and somehow resulting in my irritating engine tap which i keep blaming on valve clearance!

A friggin LOT of time if you haven't done it before. I pulled the motor out of an EF falcon in less time then it took me when I did it.

When i Heard of it being an issue i went to mazda and read the recall bullitin, The Machine used to do the butterfly screws up was stuffed up by someone and it lowered the tightening torque of the screws allowing them to become loose after time, Mine was well before the stuff up 12/01 but i still checked them using a flexable camera. Plus they are only copper, Still its not good is it.

so there was a set date at which someone lowered the torque of that machhine?? not a design fault in the manifold that mazda is covering up and therefore only covering the more recent cars still under warranty, leaving the rest of us potentially SCREWED.
geez couldnt resist that one.

Yeah thats what i thought at first but when u read the bullitin it sounds like a machine has stuffed up not the manifold design, I was still sus due to the fact u have to put thread lock on the scews for the recall so i checked will the camera just incase

Errr, I'm inclined to say "NO FARKEN WAY ON EARTH!!!". But that's just me... I have one of the very last J48s (01/03)prior to the VERY last limited edition Shades model which ended the 323s run. An SP20 may have been sold in 06/04, but I don't think anyone would be convinced it was built then...

I'd say so. When I got my SP20 it was one of the last ones in the country (got it November 2003). From memory the build date is 07/03 or 08/03. Had to be sent down from QLD cos some bums up there only wanted 1.8 BJ's

I recieved a recall letter from Mazda a couple of weeks ago, after reading this forum, i suppose i will book my car in.

What will they say if you have modifications done to the motor, e.g. i have the injen induction done, will it void the warranty???

I recieved my car back after having the warranty job done, seems to be running better, i apparently had one cracked butterfly and a few loose screws, no issues with warranty either.

Does anyone know how to access the butterflys, where they are, what they had to pull apart etc
