My brother's laser lxi tapped like a bastard when he first got it, but when we did its first oil change and put 10W40 in it it stopped altogether. I use 20W50 in the SP though since it's recommended and I haven't needed to change.

extractors for a dohc are fairly common, good luck with the SOHC, i never found any.

there is a set of sohc extrators for sale on fordlaser.com

you can do exhaust without extractors, but not the other way around.

i'd do both at the same time personally, save some $$$.

Those coilovers look weird... and are for a protege :P don't worry about coilovers, a good set of shocks / springs will be fine for personal use. unless you are going out and doing some time attack racing or similar, the benefits aren't really there.

for your budget, I would suggest;

KYB Excel-G shocks /OR/ KYB (the next model up) I THINK is the AGX? but theyre more expensive.

Whiteline/kingsprings/pedders/ springs.

Better rear swaybar, with new bushes.

Maintainance on the bushes and joints in the front suspension.

NEW STRUT MOUNTS. 50% of the astinas/lasers that I see have BUGGERED front strut mounts. theyre part made of rubber, and 20 year old rubber has a really high chance of degridation. I snapped my ford laser mounts by hitting a pothole!

*edit* hah... someone could make a killing if they could manufacture a set of front strut mounts for $100-150 each.

just remember, springs are not a cureall. if you just get the springs, TRUST ME say bye bye to your shocks, and most likely your shock mounts.

you will NEED to do at least
shocks
springs

more than likely it will also help to get:
shock mounts if yours are grody

if you want i can post up a "how to" with doing the front suspension.
