Sway Bar

The sway bar clunks on the left side when going over bumps. Had a service done and ask them to check it out looks like its moving but they dont know why, and cant guarantee a new one would fix it. Anyone else experience this?

the sway bar is a pretty simple device, it's only 2 bolts connecting it and 2 rubbers in the centre. the only thing clunking would be if the rubbers had died and the bar was moving freely within the brackets. which they would have noticed i think and then your handling would be farked also.

to be honest though, it does sounds like the sway bar. more like trailing arm sections or something of the sort attached to the wheel hub itself.

Yeah they had a look last time and they said the sway bar was moving from its original postion, they didnt say anything about trailing arms or anything else.

sorry but i forgot to ask, was it front or rear that was doing it?

if front it is a common problem, many astinas had this problem fixed under warrenty back in the 90s. the rubber has come out of the bracket and is allowing the sway bar to move. the sway bar need to be unattached at each end and pulled back into place, and pray that the rubber goes back into place.

this happened to my old car when i had the bushings replaced, they used the wrong sized mounts. i could reach in and pull the swaybar from side to side. It used to clunk because of this too.

When they fixed it, hello steering response again.

Another option is swaybar endilinks, when the ball joint dies it makes a clunking noise. I just replaced the front ones on my current car for this (and another) reason.

Aha! Yes i did.. happened when i lowered the car and it was the swaybar moving slightly to the passenger side. You need to move this back [and maybe get some of those things from whiteline they sell now to stop swaybars moving.. or you can do what i did in this thread.. it's the cheap happy solution..

That's probably because you expect people to do everything for you.
