if you want something to just take around why buy a big camera why not buy a little olympus with like 10mb that'll do the trick...in the end it all comes down to what you are using it for?

I found outdoors or in brighter conditions the Morris DS-1 won't detect light aswell as a Vivitar's photo-sensor (which NEVER misses a shot!). This is prolly because the Morris has a flat photo sensor, whereas the ones on Vititars and (almost everyone else's) are curved to catch light from all sorts of directions... Gav. |

I'd recommend a Canon S5IS, if you're after something that still is reasonably simple to use. It's still got a manual mode, has a hot shoe for external flash, and you can fit other lenses to it, but it's not an DSLR. It depends on how much you're going to really use all the settings on a DSLR, i guess.

I know it's a bit out of your price range but I'd suggest a canon 400D. I bought one at xmas time for $1188 with 2 lenses 18-55mm and 75-300mm and I wish I had've bought one sooner. Absolutely fantastic camera!
The thread labeled "My work place" in the lounge has a few photos I've taken with it.

Thanks for the info ripper, would love to get something along the lines of a 400D but really cant see me justifying spending between $1000 - $1500 on a camera that I will ony use maybe once or twice a month.
I did however look up some prices on the Canon Powershot S5IS, they are between $400 and $600, about what Im after in regards to pricing, and seeing pics of they are capable of, i think im hooked! Cheers for the info guys! Marc

How convenient - I'm also looking at a new camera. Something with better pictures than a point-and-shoot but not overly fancy.
This S5IS looks nice. I was also looking at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 |

I have the S3IS and I love it!
I haven't compared the S5 or even looked at any other camera since. The only other cameras I use are either Aaron's Canon 300d DSLR or the one on my mobile phone. Can't go wrong with Canon!! |

My main concern is that I want a camera mostly while traveling.
So I need a balance between something thats not too annoying to carry and still takes pics that do the memories justice. The pics I took with my point-and-shoot in India are nice but still very flat - I'm never satisfied with the contrast you get from a small sensor and and depth of field is always soo flat. This new camera is in preparation for 10 weeks trekking across South America. I'm thinking of taking my small point-and-shoot with me at all times in my pocket and the other camera when I have something particularly nice to shoot. Maybe the small one in my pocket and the larger in my day pack, or on a strap around my neck. |

If you rock up to the OZM meet next thurs, Adam will have his S3 and i'll have the S5 so you can have a look and feel the weight etc.
But i've still kept my IXUS V3 as it's smaller and lighter, and still good for taking pics where i'm not trying to be arty

Dont get ahead of yaself bourbs
The main reason I want a better camera cause im never happy at the way my pics turn out on my daggy 6.0mp Kodak camera, sure it does the job, but when I want real precise pics its crap, its alright for those pics where im just taking pics of car parts but basically nothing else... still its ok for a $200 camera.
