Not sure how much detail you want but heres a small overview.
Header design is actually pretty complex in what it does but pretty simple in practice if that makes sense. Theres heaps of different types but ill focus on the common types for our car. 4-1 headers are much easier generally to manufacture, and thus are usually cheaper. They have less stuff ups from the factory due to the easier nature to manufacture. 4-2-1 headers are generally made by hand making them more expensive and more tedious to make, hence the cost increase. In performance terms a header is designed to work with a certain rpm band in mind. In this band is when the max effect of the header will be achieved this can be coupled with a tuned intake manifold, intake pipe, cams etc to produce a compound effect or staggered to produce a wider power band. What typically determines the rpm band the header is good for, is the lenght of the primaries (the pipes that come out of the block), longer the pipes the lower the rpm (read: 95% of the time). Having crazy short pipes leads the header to benefitting the top end. The reason that 4-1 and 4-2-1 differ in performance gains is due to pressure waves. The 4-2-1 header essentially has two lenghts of pipe with varying lenghts, thus creating two pressure waves albeit smaller then a 4-1s possible pressure wave. This essentially creates a wider power band by giving two points in the rpm band in which it provides a boost of sorts. In regards to quality the OBX is nickel plated steel so wrapping it isnt a great idea, the welds can also at times be a little flaky in quality. Its also not a tuned header in that the primaries are soooo short that it would take revving the engine to 15k to get any gain from the design. What gains you do get are from opening up the piping a bit and removing the precat (a major blockage). The best header you can get in australia is the pacemaker. Its also probably the second best header available off the shelf and can be had off fleabay for about 400 including delivery. Did see them going for 350-360 a year or two ago.

Ice - Thanks heaps for that explanation! Its all making sense now I always wondered why the OBX was cheaper than the other ones I've found

Had a bit of a chuckle to myself when I dug this up from my archives
Still cant believe this was just under $3000 worth of damage!

This was ages ago, about a year or two ago.
Basically what happened was: Got rear ended by some P plater chick in one of those smaller 4WD's (like a Suzuki Jimny type thinggo). We were both turning left from a slip lane (single file format) and I slowly crept forward to see any oncoming traffic before turning. She saw my brake lights go out, and mistook me for actually turning. What did she do? She planted it and landed herself right in the back of my car... I later pulled off into a small car park about 200m down the road, with her following me thinking that she might follow me into the car park and we can exchange insurance details and such. No... I thought wrong... I pulled into the car park to inspect the damage, but I was the only one there - no small 4WD baring P plates behind me or anything; she had pulled a runner... I couldn't even properly see her rego number as the plate was bashed in and obscured in many different ways from the impact. I cannot express my anger, frustration and dissapointment without getting possibly getting banned from these forums due to my disgusting language... but I refrained so I should be alright! . As we were both P platers at the time, I would have expected her to try to abide fully by the law and at very least give me her rego number. I knew I was doing the right thing by going straight to the cops to follow things up and see if there were any alternate ways of dealing with this, however there wasn't much I could do as I had no details; Only a massive dent in my bumper and a mildly dented boot. Luckily dad knew a mate who worked in the insurance (the same company we are insured with too!) business and sorted things out... Admittedly as there were no details the claim took about a month and a half to process, and later proceeded to get the car back to its awesome, Mazda-like state!

In this case, I would turn my hazard lights on, jump straight out of the car with my phone and snap her rego than jump back in and pull over to some where to inspect the damage!
I found that most P plater chicks drive very fast & furious, they change lanes right in front of your face and only signal after half way, they drive and put make ups at the same time, and some times they just pull out from farking nowhere right in front of you and take off like nothing happened, it is so frustrated seeing them like that! I wish I had a bazooka welded to my car so I can just blow them off |

Nevertheless, my car is fixed and I'm happy! Went for a quick hills bash in my car today, first time I drove it in about 4 weeks after getting the leaking shocks replaced (I didn't pay for it ) and I cant believe how much of a difference there is! Even with the stock suspension setup!

So I had a bit of spare time up my sleeve today, and decided to record my exhaust tone. Let me know what you think!

next time it happens to you, CHASE THEM DOWN and ALWAYS call the police! Forget what the proper way to do things... here they won't come out unless it's a serious wreck or if there's injuries... so make them come by LYING ("Oh I feel a little dizzy")... who cares, I'm paying them with my taxes anyway!

A few little things, not even worth calling an update...
The latest addition to the car - soon to be painted and put on the car: Also reinstalled the dealership number plate frames - now everyone knows the car was bought from City Mazda - Oh and must change the rusted screws And finally must get this serious issue fixed! - I couldn't be bothered doing the shoe test as I figured I could probably fit my whole friggin leg in there! Also looking to sell my speakers (front 5x7's and rear 6x9's), so there might be a thread on this soon (maybe)

Also diggin' the Projector look inside the BJ1 headlights
I'm thinking I may go ahead and retrofit some projectors inside my headlights... and also paint the inside of the black (after much inspiration and answered questions from Ben and BG1.8sp )

Plans for the lights sound good man!
If you are going to black the inserts, might be a good idea to remove the blinkers and smoke them lightly too... Actually you should be able to pull those apart also.. Would look odd with headlights black inserts but blinkers chrome... Just a thought you should look into EDIT: and if you have that chrome centre garnish/grille do that black with the lights. Again chrome grill with black lights... Kinda odd. Colour coded would look the best tho (can be bothered to go into your pics and check)

Fortunately mine is already colour coded , so things should look in place. The BJ1's light setup is wired in that the indicator is a separate unit to the actual headlight housing. So theres twice as much oven use required, twice as much painting needed etc etc, but I'll be alright
