Cool D-Train's SP20

Hey, well where do i start here. Been a member for a while now but never shown off my baby before for fear of people saying stuff about the car still being stock so.... i am starting on a journey not dissimilar to a fellow member of mine marcsp20 and start to mod my beautiful '03 Astina SP20. However my build is taking a slightly different path to Marc's. While big wheels, huge sound systems and other blingy things are absolutely fine by me, my 20 on the other hand is going to represent something that was evident that mazda was striving for in the sedan that sort of carried over to the Hatch or Protege 5 (P5) in the US and that is race/race styling.

I have decided that since now i have a work vehicle, paid the car off and don't have much time to drive it during the week that i will start participating in track days. Since seeing some events at lakeside and checking out the MX-5 track day a few weeks ago, it has shown me anyone can get into this sport even with no experience and a stock ride.

So this is where i'll be starting "STOCK" and from there is a long road ahead.

I did compete today at Lakeside and man thats an awesome yet challenging course. There was a good mix of cars in the catagory with the likes of Dattos, Audi TT ,Silvia, Pug 306, a Porche at one stage, Mazda Premacy and a Commodore. The Commo put himself into the wall on Hungry corner in the first race which i thought was absolutely hilarious.

So i was aiming today for a time anywhere between 1.15 & 1.19 which i thought was reasonable for a stock car. And to say the least i came out of today very happy with my times from the outset.

Fastest times each race:
Race 1: 1:15.620
Race 2: 1:14.190
Race 3: 1:13.640
Race 4: 1.12.660

Overall i'm very happy with those times though 2 things came out of today
1. Need it lowered and stiffen up the car a little more 2. Need better tyres, semi slick may be in order.

I ran today with the stock rims cos my 17's scrub and i probably wouldn't have had any tyre left by the end of the day also fried my brake pads which i wasn't to concerned about, good excuse to hit up GSL Motorsport for some newies.
Next Race is 12th July, hoping to have new springs, headers in, all lightweight pulleys aquired and in and (maybe) some semi slicks.

Yeah what Project.R.Racing said. I bought a year license when i paid my entry fee. Its easy just fill out a form and you're done if you pay by credit card they have the card waiting for you. its only $55 for a year too.

Here's where to go for info and entry forms

UPDATE!!! Got new slotted rotors a few weeks ago.

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4/100_1735.jpg
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4/100_1733.jpg

Also my OBX Headers arrived.
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4/100_1732.jpg

Ordered some track worthy brakepads, some QFM A1 RM's from GSL Rallysport.

K&N Typhoon Series complete cold air intake ordered from the US (which arrived today) cos the don't sell them in Oz anymore. On the up side it was cheaper than what they sold it here for incl. shipping. MPS Garage are stuffing me round a bit with my order for all my lightweight pulleys.

New fully adjustable suspension with camber top plates have been ORDERED, PAYED FOR and were shipped yesterday. The culprets are BC Items and from what the yanks say, they ARE THE SH!T! A couple of the guys doing time attack swear by them having tried the likes of the big name branded ones and say BC kits are far superior to the rest. ALSO in the last 2 weeks i've priced a new set of wheels and Semi Slicks ,which, are both very pricey but looks like the credit card is finally going to get the workout its been longing for.

Yeah what's wrong with that. Going fully JDM B!thches.

Few set backs though with some of my items. 1. Suspension arrived only to find out they were for 04+ Mazda 3. 2. Distributer to GSL Rallisport are taken there sweet ass time to produce an order, still no brakepads! 3. Started to put on my K&N CCAI only to realise instead of giving me 2 reducer connections i got 2 staight ones. SIGH!!! More waiting!

Damage from the love tap.

The white paint from the tyres made it look worse than what it really was.

Well, as some are aware I got back on the track on sunday after my embrace with the wall on the last sprint day. And needless to say i was able to achive a time that i was looking for the first time on the last track day but was unfortunately held up by grampa in his son's rx8. 1.12:66 was the time to beat. I had joined forces with the Track Attack boys this time and as to be expected they all knew how to drive. So i was confident i Could put in a good time. I took to the track in the first race not expecting much, just warm up the car and get a feeling of the track again. On the last lap i scored an 1.11:01 and that was me in a relaxed state. So the next I pushed a little harder taking another half a second off to 1.10:50. Race 3 i ran into traffic but still a 1.10. Race 4 i dropped .05 of a sec to 1.10:45. Then we had finished super early (2:30) as there were no major incidents over the day so we got a mixed group race consisting of a super mix of cars on the track include my fave the Lotus Exige. There is a photo of me going head to head with one on this site www.g3photography.com.au Sorry can't paste the image, i have to purchase to get it off the site. He wasn't going very fast, i thought he would blast past but he was doing no more than 20kph faster than me. All in all i realised i NEED new tyres. KU36's are called for and when i get my TE37's i should drop another 1 sec hopefully. BTW i passed the MX5 on my first lap out but then gave him some advice, i'm all for helping out fellow mazda drivers, but by the end of the day it did help, what i told him, which made it harder for me towards the end of the day to pass him. Thick is the word i'd used to describe the "grid girl" particularly in de thigh area. Certiainly turned my off, but hey, the 76yo guy competing was hassling the photographer for the pic of the girl on his car.
