[NSW] Recent Owner of a SP20

Hi everyone,

Been a long time member to fordlaser.com. have had tons of cars over the years. the longest ive kept and owned during the time have been lasers that ive done bpt conversion and 1 very clean import bg familia.

*** Just copying from a project thread I had started from fl.com ***

I recently purchased this:

I'll post up more pictures when they become available.

After much debate, I have chosen not to install my BPT thats in my project laser and into my SP20, but rather turbo my exisitng FS-DE 2.0L (stock SP20 engine) due to the RTA emission laws

Work Needed to be done:
- Replace clutch
The pressure plate is getting a bit soft and clutch engaging is very jerky
- Replace engine mounts
A little bit of engine movement at present
- Replace front struts
The front end is pretty boaty at present, they need replacing
- Removal of plenum and loctiting the screws to prevent the VICS failure

Wish List:
- Turbo Kit
- Coilovers
- Heavy Duty Clutch with Flywheel Machined

I have purchased a turbo kit from a American Delivered "Mazdaspeed Protege 2003.5 MSP"

- factory turbo cast manifold
- factory garrett T2554R turbo
- factory cast exhaust dump
- factory turbo plug in ecu
- factory turbo radiator
- factory intercooler
- all the misc bits to make it happen

Need to weld a fitting on the sump to make a oil return for the turbo

It should arrive from Philidelphia in a few weeks.

I will be ordering a BC Coilover kit.

Got quotes to getting new front struts and springs arent cheap unfortnually.
For a little extra, i'll be buying coilovers and replace all corners,
Like these sp20 ones pictured below

i'll post up pics of the turbo kit on friday night.

Im not going to tear down the car back to nothing like i did with my laser.

just adding a few additions and probably let joe @ hi-comp do all the work if the labour isnt too much and have the car off the road for 2 weeks max and it will be sorted and back driving daily.

I'll get 3 dyno power runs while its still na and same after when its boosted.

then have graph the na power output vs. boosted output.

awaiting quote from hi-comp for the new clutch kit, changing all engine mounts and estimate labour cost of fitting the turbo kit (would be easily done in 3/4 of a day)

update 17-09-2009

received all my turbo kit from a mazdaspeed protege from the U.S. today
finally got a chance to get off work at a decent hour and see hi-comp performance.

left the big box with all the turbo gear at the workshop and have scheduled to have the car dropped off on saturday, ready for working on first thing monday.

I'll do my best to pop in and get some progess shots.

here are a few pics off the person that i purchased the kit from.

got a update.

The factory mazdaspeed protege ecu does not plug into the aussie sp20's loom as once thought. the connectors are totally different.

In saying that, I have bitten the bullet and have gone ahead with getting a ems stinger installed and tuned.

a expense that was unexpected.

The u.s. non turbo and turbo protege's, when people do conversions, all they do is switch the ecu and utilise the same afm, loom, etc...

I'll try to offload it back the u.s.

just another update.

visted the car again today.

since the ecu didnt fit as once thought,

they got all the bits and did a dummy fit to see whether all the hardware fits.
lucky enough all the manifolds and turbo and water and oil lines fit perfect.

paid a deposit to get the ems stinger 4 ordered.

tomorrow all the turbo bits should be all bolted up.

ecu should be up and running by the end of the week,
at this stage, it should be finished tuning by wednesday next week

i did my best to obtain as much info as we can, but because the MSP protege is widely available to the americans, there is not 2 much info that ive been able to find.

I was very confident on all the hardware fitting up perfect eg:
- water lines
- oil lines
- turbo exhaust manifold
- turbo
- dump pipe and connecting to the original exhaust
- msp radiator thats shorter than stock to allow room for the front mount intercooler
- msp fmic, that mounts on the side of the msp radiator and condensor.

i could not get enough info or people off forums to communicate to help me out with getting pics of the ecu and pics of the ecu socket, that i could compare with.

alot of the protege owners go straight for aftermarket ecu's. thats probably the partial reason why their was a lack of info on the ecu side of things.

either way, I am going down a better path, but its starting to dig deep into my pockets early.

im using the standard cams and stupid variable intake plenum.
I only have been reading recently that the intake plenum off a 626 with a FS engine is a bolt onto the sp20. It doesnt have all that variable VICS crap.

with the ems controlling everything as the car hasnt got fly by wire throttle, etc...
we are going to control the variable VICS intake with the ems and whilst tuning, finding the best point to open and shut it to.

If it becomes a pain, I'll install a new intake plenum off a 626 and get the car retuned as the map load value point would be altered with a different plenum

the SP20 did a whopping 71kW at the wheels (non turbo) LOL

Joe @ Hi-Comp Performance stored the dyno sheet, so next week when it runs turbo, on one of the dyno sheets, he'll compare non turbo to turbo.

just visited hi-comp while out getting lunch

here are some pics i took with my phone.

still a backorder from bc.

so just sitting tight and waiting patiently, and to be honest with the unexpected cost of using a aftermarket ecu... the backorder couldnt be more perfect.

It'll give me a chance to pay this off a bit before I pay for the rest of the coilovers

update

visited the car today.

the ems is wired up, and triggering properly with the modification made intake camshaft sensor.

car starts up and runs, currently on a base map not tuned.

since the ecu install, the factory tacho is not working correctly. this is one thing that the auto sparky is visiting to get this working correctly.

new pics from my visit today.

Here is a link to youtube.

The first few mins of the car getting on the dyno with a base tune, still with the factory non turbo fuel system.
Due to the injectors maxxing out at 4000rpm @ 10psi with the run shown, only small light and medium throttle tuning was performed until a rescheduled date with the new parts on

much much much cheaper than the common aftermarket alternatives that have been mentioned in the turbo sp20 thread to purchase.

I guess it was a matter of luck.

In saying this, the car has been at hi-comp performance for alot longer than originally expected, so the labour cost is up in the air at present,

due to the electrical drama's we're having with 2 ecu's in the car

Nice car man & Welcome!

Just a quik Q. Did you get the Turbo kit @ a reasonable price? I woulda went much bigger on the 2.0L since your using the EMS. It'll no doubt give good low end response but won't do our dyno sheet justice.

I'm sure you'd be familiar with the mad builds they do on fl.com hehe. They would go nuts with the 2.0L. Great engine with a Garrett GT28! I the end, whatever you build will be a great little car by looks of it!

Great pics too

the FS-DE block are known to fail and crack very easily.

Im only after a small gain, as non turbo are so slow and disapointing for a good looking car

Agreed, your talking to the converted mate, but alot on here luv they're NA's (non-turbo that is lol) er.....may be due to them being P-Platers?

Jeziotrot from fl.com/MX6.com is running a GT2871RS on his 2.0L stock compression with EMS & is pushing 17psi reliably all day! I don't know what donk though but he said they are bullet-proof so, doubt I'm talking about the same engine? My bad if I wasn't

Anyway I'm a B6T fan @ heart & will be pushing the MX5 quite a bit in the not too distant. I may go bit tamer though than what the GTX had?

I dont think that the FS-DE block has many problems. Other parts of the engine are certainly vunerable (e.g. rods, pistons unde boost greater than 10psi and of course the VICS screws issue) - not to mention the gearbox.

I dont think that having ooodles of power is everything (unless you're Jeremy Clarkson lol). That said, Im considering turbo but will limit my expectations for hp in order to keep things reliable and at a reasonable cost.

Keep up the good work!! Pity you kept the radiator and a/c condensor

Jessie replaced his F2 [2.2L] with an FE3T [2L].
