Fuel Economy / other questions

hey guys

Just a question: Ive gotten 310km's out of half a tank in a BPT running BP Ultimate. This is really quite good. I expected 350 out of a full tank.

Last tank I got 420 and the tank before that I got 370 - 380. the first tank saw some floggin, whereas this tank has seen realitivily little... The whole turbo thing means you change quite early as you really dont need to push it that hard to get fast.

That being said, is my car running too lean? would this affect the economy in such a way that it would get excellent milage? What does pinging sound like.. does anyone have a .wav or somesuch? It sounds pretty tappity when idle but thats BP engines for you.

cheers in advance.

If your worried about it running lean, the only way you'll be able to check it propperly is to get it on a dyno.

The Km's you are getting are about right. If you don't flog it around town for a tank, you should see 450-500kms, and freeway driving 550-620km/tank...again providing on how much WOT you do.

The best way to describe ping is the sound a spray can makes when you shake it with the marble inside. An small electric spark/ark also has a similar sound (like when you have the coil lead off and put it near earth to test for spark). A mic will hardly ever pick it up with all the background noise of the motor itself.

What oil are you using in the engine? I'd have expected the tappets to settle down by now with a noisy idle.

The Lynx is around 450kms giving it a bit and being around town

it has seen 620kms on a trip with a bit of squirting here and there.

your figures seem about right

"If I have a turbod engine Ill use less fuel"

Thats a brave statement. What I have found is its no longer necessary to rev anywhere near as high to get well, well out infront of trafic at the lights, and other then that, even lower, because your up the ass of whoevers infront of you. I havent lost a race from the lights yet.

I generally change at 3.5 - 5.5 somewhere, depending on the gear and speed limit.

That Being Said:
A turbo engine is alot more responsive on the throttle, and I dont exactly give it much stick in day to day driving. However, if you do, it will go through the fuel very, very, very quickly. As it is putting more air into the engine, it must balance this with more fuel, therefore if your not careful with your rev's its quite easy to go 200 km on a full tank.

It all depends on how you drive it.

true to that, under 3200 rpm should be sameish as n/a but once over that, the positive vaccuum is increased and more air and fuel is added than an n/a engine. so driving a turbo to 5k all the time will reduce you mileage heaps.

AND 98 ron fuel wil go alot better than 91 ron **** in a turbo...

or cost in general?? ie sydney??

and what test cause I was under the impression could only be done on a dyno is that right?
or is it a compresion test, cause yeah mine seems to get crap mileage some times.

FYI,
get your fuel from a few different places as some are DODGY on the litres and who knows what is left exactly.
case in point mate lives downstairs has a 4wd with a 50 litre spare tank, filled it up at lane cove airport/maccas it took 65 litres, he went off at the attendant who swore they are checked each week but no way to prove it all went in the spare tank as it makes a click when it switches back to main tank and that is when he stopped. he goes to the woolworths on epping road now and gets about 3litres less per 100.

and do you guys call a tank full to about to shut down or full till light comes on or stays on.\
mine has never drunk more than 40 lites even with light on for a while. but has a 55l tank.

Since the price of fuel has gone through the roof I've seen that public transport has become more popular. Since then Victorian Premier Bracks has not incresed the frequency of public transport but promised to toll the parking at rail stations. Slimy double dipping bastard.

test a few things like filter, injectors, fuel delivery etc.
crappy drity filter = high fuel usage
old busted injectors = random over fuel usage
high fuel delivery = old high fuel usage.

or you could just stand behind you car and get i friend to rev the **** out of it and look for black light smoke (unburnt fuel) but doesn't always work ass car not under load...

my car was only getting about 475 per tank, i changed the dirty, crap covered filter to a new one and got 550 per tank, me waz more happy

hah, im speaking from my personal experciance here. Maybe some NA cars are more responsive, but generally speaking, id go with the turbo for throttle responiveness.

/W Turbo in 4th, I can put my foot down and overtake quite, quite easily. In my old NA car Id have to drop it to 3rd and flog the crap out of it to get the same speed boost.

My boost kicks in a 2.5ish (possibly lower) leaving very little lag. 4th is my favourite gear cause for most situations you can cruise just under boost on it but if u need the extra power, its there for you.
