Turbo Conversion
OK, this thread is mainly a place for me to put heaps of pics and stuff of the car over the various stages its going through.
Please dont post in this thread untill its finished. Sat Feb 07: HALF CUT CHOP DAY 8am sitting at maccas waiting for Mik (Sik Astina). We have a yarn as we do and then cruise around to the workshop Screamin Performance 35 Chapman Street Fairy Meadow NSW 2519 Darryl (owner) rocks up about 8:45 to open up and after a quick hello we roll the half cut out to the parking lot to begin stipping parts. http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG 323 BG GTX (estimated to be earlier 90s model) First came off the bonnet then micks shirt... sexy sexy boy! We proceeded to stip the easy **** first, I got keen and started on the guards and mik pulled the indicators and headlights out. http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG We realised after taking some stuff off that we forgot to take a pic of the halfcut standard... hence the missing headlights :) http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG Headlights, indicators, grill and some other stuff http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG front bar Next came the radiator...after discovering it was full, we drained the radiator into a catcher thing darryl lent us. We then removed the air con system which allowed the radiator to lift up. This is quite a task when you have no pliers and only a set of wire cutters :) http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG our collection Darryl had brought over an engine crane incase we got excited and pull the motor out. We started on the engine mounts, got 2 off but the last had seized up. The halfcut was also sitting on wheels attached to the brake rotors so it was deemed way too much effort to pull the motor out. (plus I was paying darryl to do it anyway) It was starting to hit around 11-11:30 and it was friking hot so we decided to pull the rest of the small stuff out (bottles etc) then clean up. Mik had spent a little time in the cabin (Well wots left of it anyway) and found some genuine second hand jap ciggies and some other crap. He pulled the ecu and instrument cluster out and we feed the main harness through the firewall to the engine bay. http://www.jynx.au.com/images/frontc...%20(Small).JPG Only thing left at this point it too finish the harness removal and grap the stuff off the firewall and the gearbox and transfer and the thing can get wrecked. Big Thanks go out to Mik for his help. Car will be going down to the workshop on Sat 14th for fitting.[/img] |
Sat Feb 14: IN THE SHOP
Well I went down this morning and picked up the 2 gearboxes and some other misc crap off the halfcut. Engine is out and is currently sitting on the floor next to the 4wd gearbox. Mick rocked up about 10:30 for a yarn and then Suzanne (gf) brought the astina down about 11ish with all the goodies inside. Talked to Darryl and his son (Trent i think) about what I want done and where to put various pieces. Drove away in the commonwhore and left my baby to be gutted and beafed up. |
Any leftovers ???

Mon 1st March: Out with the old in with the new
OId motor has been removed and the new motor is having its seals and belts replaced as well as the fitment of the new injectors and measuring up for the new manifold. Nothing else to report. Should have some new pics on saturday with hopefully the new motor in the car! |
Sun Mar 06: Mmmm Intercooler
Another visit to the workshop and the IC had been mounted and the motor is in the car and awaiting further work. Few teaser shots. http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0588_Small.jpg FMIC with old headers->cat under the car http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0589_Small.jpg mmm turbo |
Sat Mar 20: I see the light at the end of the tunnel
Rocker cover has pretty much finished its polish, just a few fiddly bits between the lettering to fixup. Manifold has been made and new turbo is mounted with new 3" snout. New dump pipe has been made which consits of a 2.5" main feed with a seperate wastegate feed. Intercooler piping is due this week with some misc wiring to be completed (haltech, fuel pump etc). After that its time to hit the rollers. Guys rekon I should be rolling in 2wks assuming it passes Eng and EPA inspections. http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_1_Small.jpg 3" intake and new manifold. http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_2_Small.jpg closer view http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_5_Small.jpg new manifold http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_6_Small.jpg rocker and manifold http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_7_Small.jpg new dump, needs to be cleaned up http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...or_8_Small.jpg under the car, hole is for O2 sensor, the seperate feeds join into 3" pipe http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...otor_Small.jpg business end of the exhaust... just waiting on the cat. |
and then u say " thanks for the pics Mick " :P haha
|
everyone knows your my bitch.
|
Thats a real nice manifold! Whats the ETA of complete finish?
|
They think about 2 weeks, but depends on smooth sailing. There is still some uncertantity about the ignition setup and a few other minor things.
|
sorry gotta ask...jim, what you polishing with? that mani came up hella good!
|
meh like i would spend time doing that... workshop did it with a number of tools and buffers.

Sat March 27: I need to breathe
Todays visit unearthed the started airbox setup including "Five R Racing" catch can. (this will probably be the first sticker to piss off) http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0641_Small.jpg http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0642_Small.jpg The blue pipe (not the bendy ag line stuff) will be replaced with braided line. Also the black hose from the breather will also be replaced by braided line. The filter for the CC is in the airbox to attempt a "legal" setup. Engineer seemed to like the idea... 2 x K+N pod filter (1 for the CC below the main filter - cant see it in the pic) 1 x TurboSmart Type 2 BOV. psssssssssht 2 runs of bluey bendy ag line type stuff - 1 to the turbo inlet, the other to the passenger side inner guard (CAI). http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0643_Small.jpg http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0644_Small.jpg http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0645_Small.jpg http://www.jynx.au.com/gallery/album...0646_Small.jpg None of that is new apart from the 3" cat now being in place... just been painted and cleaned up. Looks 10x better. What is left? * Intercooler piping to be finished * Work out the best way to ignite the sucker. We have two options avaliable, each would work just as good. Option 1: Direct Fire 2 Coils setup using wasted spark. Only problem with this is we need a home signal for the ecu to trigger the firing sequence. We _think_ there is one in the GTX dizzy but they are not sure. Waiting on mechanic confirmation. Option 2: Standard Dizzy setup with an ignition booster Using a Crane Fireball booster and coil. Nothing wrong with this setup, just cost 2-3x more :) My preferred option is #1 if we can get a home signal out of the dizzy. * Wire new Walbro Fuel Pump. Rated to 500hp, this sucker should have no problems pumping fuel to the reg/rail. Intank replacement so no annoying sounds associated with external upgrades. * Replace rear brakes and swaybar * Tap Air Flow sensor thread into back of i/c piping. Under the piping next to the battery. * Complete Haltech Wiring * Dyno Tune [/img] |
JynX, with your installation, is it a case of following what other guys have done or is every engine swap a little bit different?
|
They are basically the same, ive taken advice from a few key figures.
Mine isnt a typical conversion either. |
wheres a pic of Ned Kelly
|
|
Is that polished or chromed? if its polished it will most likely rust.
|
its polished tony

If it rusts in 5 years, ill get another one, its primary purpose is to absorb heat... |
