turbo help
 

hey all,
just bought this turbo and just noticed that the blades are bent, can anyone help with what could possibly cause this damage

Ouch, that's shaft play for you. Time for a new turbo, bro.

how much shaft play is a ball bearing meant to have cos there's hardly any play

Clearly less than that one has...sorry but you need to complain and get your money back!

Well thats not good. I'd hate to say it but the cost of getting that fixed, rebuilt and balanced will probably be the cost of a new one.

hey what had happened to the turbo is the front compressor housing had snapped in a drift crash. it hit the wheel leaving the indent on the fins.. its new wheel and balance time for that turbo.. sorry again little lee.. as discusted on the phone, i didnt know.

those turbos are $1350 from garrett

Yes. It was the one I was going to run but I don’t have the money for an aftermarket Ecu to turn it properly atm so I sold it to them as they needed a turbo. If I had looked at the fins properly (it was sitting in my shed in a box full of rags) I wouldn’t have sold it to them/ I wouldn’t have bought it ether...

Again I’m sorry for my stupidity and not having a good look at the turbo before buying it... I will be giving them their money back obviously.

IF it's original top quality Turbo - still cost less then a new unit to fix.

I did a Hi-flowed of an old T25 non roller/ball-Bearing about oh 18 months at GCG. I think it only cost $500 odd. I know it was about the same if I had bought the turbo 2nd hand. I think new garrett GT25 type with 350 or 380HP fornt end was around $1300
Dropped a 400HP wheel comp combo into the front end.
I tihnk it was off a Sr20 of S13 era originally. Too bad I never tried it out. Had buyer for it.

Yeah the s13 red top had the baby T25G the blacktops got a minutely bigger T25 and the s14 got the T28. All of which are brush bearing type.
The Brush bearing types are super cheap to rebuild.
However the Ball bearing types seem to be a lot more expensive to rebuild.
But even then it's still going to be cheaper to get it rebuilt.

Send GCG an email with all specs of the turbo and a picture or two. And tell them that you just want a stock rebuild and they will give you a price.

the ball bearing turbos are expensive to rebuild because you can't rebuild the centre cartridges (replace the bearings)... journal bearing turbos, you can damn near replace everything

but ball bearing turbos are more reliable, spool up, and flow better... they can withstand compressor surges and tolerate shaft play better... they are also much less susceptible to shaft play (because the bearings are more reliable)

all good matt, we know you wouldn't have sold us a dodgy turbo, this kind of stuff happens and unfortunately it happened with us, we don't blame you, we'd still buy or swap stuff with you. and with both the lot of us busy with things it kinda made things hard on us all. still all good
