Help
Hi guys, my sp20 is at the mechanic's trying to resolve an issue.
car vibrates as though it is going to stall and sometimes it cuts out all together. going up an incline car looses power, this problem does not occur all the time, mechanic has put car on dynostic machine and has come up with no findings. he has eliminated EGR valve, coilpacks, catalytic converter. Does anyone have any ideas. Last edited by maz sp20; 23-05-2012 at 04:42 PM. |

Had an intermittent issue on brothers old 180sx.
Fuel pump crapped its self! Also, Mabey the pump has moved up in its cradle so when the fuel gets aroun half... You go up a hill then no more fuel is being sucked up my the pump. Just a thought.... My old BG use to cut out when it was below half. Thought it was pump... Got one from the wreckers... Didn't change a think... Turned out to be the baffles inside the tank it's self were rusted away so replaced the tank! But yeah, loosing power under load and cutting out could be fuel pump failing. EDIT: also, get the FPR checked. If the diafram is on its way out in the pressure reg can create similar issues.

Lol, do that first! More likely to be intake pipe cracks. Thought I read that your mechanic checked for vac. Leaks. Apparently not

The only way to diagnose this car is to drive it , could be a lot of things need to feel if it is electrical or fuel and how the car does it

Well not really, egr you can pull apart clean and re assemble. Cat you pull off and visually inspect. And some mechanics have a coil pack testing machine.
Cool little machine that is. measures coil impedance, supply voltage, supply current. Output voltage and output current. Tests the insulation resistance too. Some mechs have a simplified kinda crappy tester... And a handful actually have the propper one. Actually you can chuck a fuel pump onto a flow bench. And do the usual elec. testing. Should make up a little vacuum leak tester using PVC piping and a PVC plug with a valve in it and pressurise the intake to 4 or 5 psi. Enough to find leaks... But not enough to do damage! We have multiple here at my place That way you can check if your intake pipe or other vacuum lines aren't leaking.

it is hard to diagnose because it is intermittent (does it when it feels like it) |

if ther was an issue with anything electircal u would think the ecu would thro up an error code of some sort.. have u checked the ecu for codes??? i have a scangauge here is brisbane that shows if there are any error codes on the ecu..
i am thinking due to the fact it warms up then this problem starts that it could be ur; - coil packs how many kms has the car done??? its not something like ur fuel filter is it??? it sounds like there is a lack/to much of fuel/spark/air...

like I told you before..... the symptoms you described all points to the coil packs.... my experience tells me on the money that your coil packs are bad
why waste time on labour paying the dealer to fix the car for something so simple? get new coils, new plugs, new leads and move on!
