Talking Tyre Sizes

Hello boys and girls.

I need to get new tyres my tread has run down too far. But I need some help with knowing what sizes mean and which sizes would fit my rims.
I have 17inch wheels that are 7inches wide. The tyres I have on now are Falken Ziex 215/40ZR17's. I've been looking around for some new tyres and I'm getting confused. I found one tyre whos size is 215/40R17 but then it said for a rim width of 7.5inches. I don't get it. Is it possible for two tyres to have the same size ie. 215/40R17 and to fit on a different width rim? Help please?
What size tyres would fit?

ALso, suggest some good tyres that aren't too expensive either if any of you have any good idea's I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks!

I have toyo Proxes T1-R's and they the best ive ever had....you pay a bit mroe for them but its well worth it, the grip level in the dry and the wet is unreal...i believe it is possible that a 215 will fit a 7.5 inch rim, usually there are 2 widths of tyres for evey width in rim i think.....

I had 205's on 16 x 7.5 rims on my old car, the sidewall is stretched inwards a bit more is all.

215 = width in mm
40 = tyre wall height expressed as a percentage of the width (86mm)
R is a speed rating of 170km/h Maximum
Z is a speed rating of 300km/h+
17 is the wheel fitment. 17" diamater (431.8mm)

215/40 sounds about right for an Astina. 7" would be the ideal fitment but I've seen 215s living quite happily on narrower rims.

are you sure your mags arent 7.5" wide because i have a sneaking suspcion that they are. if ubdeed they are then 215/40's are the right tyres for you my friend. if they are only 7" wide then if i were replacing all four i would go for a 205/45 (for comfort) or a 205/40 (readily availible) just ensure that the numbers after all the tyre size numbers are 84 or greater. this is your tyre load rating.

i have currently got TOYO proxes in a 215/35/18 . these i believe are extremely good tyres . Much better then nankangs which i previously had.

i used to have 17x7 rim and 215/40/17 tyres on them with no hassles at all.

nankang suck, i agree there, those toyos are great/grippy, i agree there also

I assume you have a BA cos of your pic.
215/40s will fit easily on 7" wide rims, so go out and get them if you want, if you want a bit more comfort, get 215/45s, will be cheaper also as wrx's and most bmw's, import run these now.
