ENGINE CONVERSION FOR A 99 (bj) PROTEGE 323???

hey guys,
i was just wondering if any1 knows of an engine conversion for my 99 protege bj,
as ive been reading some threads n stuff i can only find conversions for the astinas. and ive read that the astinas will take the gtx engine without much mods so it pretty much drops in.
now i was thinking would the gtx engine fit in the protege like it would in the astinas? is the engine bay on the protege same as the astinas??
if any has done or knows of a turbo engine that would drop in the protege without a problem please let me know......

cheers

bruce

There is virtually no way you'll get a BP based engine into a BJ legally. BG & BA models only.

Which engine do you have? the 1.6 or 1.8?

Hi Bruce,

If you want a replacement engine you can only choose between the FS-ZE (2.0 170hp Jspec) and FS-DET (2.0 175hp? +lots of torque turbo Jspec). Now, since you can't get either of those engines in this country, stop thinking about them!

If you have a 1.6, they respond to aftermarket turbo charging very well. See www.hiboost.com .

AND SEARCH FFS!
Gav.

I believe you can get both turbo and supercharger kits for the 1.6. Not 2 sure on how good either of them are or how much they cost. I don't believe you can make too much gains with the 1.6 engine without them. The best idea would be to get the 1.8/2.0 engine, but they probably wouldn't be worth the money. You'd do better selling your current car and buying a BJ with the 1.8 or a SP20. From memory the 1.6 with plenty of mods still doesn't make near the power of a stock SP20, possibly even a stock 1.8 would be better.

cheers guys,

funny enough ive got the full instruction sheet for turboing my car.
since im not that mechanically minded i wouldnt do it.
although the steps it shows with picks n all doesnt seem so hard.
now of course if i could do it obviously i would as it would be so much cheaper.
buying all the parts and fitting it in myself.
im guessing the price if i was to do it would be roughly about 3k.
any1 out there who knows how to do so??? lol

There has been many threads about the cost of turbo'ing your car. Most people would think themselves lucky if they get out of it for much less than $5000 when buying a BPT replacement motor. By the time you get a new exhuast, intake pipe's, turbo, ecu and tuning (i.e the very basics) you'll find you have easily used more than $3000.

it is possible, but the key is finding the ecu really...

gav, you forgot one option... the 1.5l engine, (or its head at least!) that should get you a bit extra power up high with VVT.....
you will need the new head as well as the new ECU and a corrected loom for the valve gear

go the hi-boost road, then think about gearboxes...
i would get from hiboost the manifold, the ecu, all the lines but not the intercooler... get the remainder locally to yourself... second hand turbos come up often with people upgrading their cars all the time
how about here? http://www.opelaus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11741
