203mm x 367.38mm = 74578mm^2

74578 / 39000 = 1.9123

So, surface area of my pod is nearly double that of the original panel filter...

And i personally found a dramatic difference between performance with the panel filter and the pod filter. I tried CAI setups on both and the panel filter has nothing on the pod filter.

I now don't have a CAI setup with the pod just like rob, and i find that performance is better than when i had the K&N panel filter with a CAI setup...
So you measured one and took the specs for the other (that you had) from a URL, that isn't very accurate.

well i didn't want to have to pull my pod right out of the engine bay... thats the same pod i have in my car so the measurements would be the same if i measured them or used the dimentions off the website, and the airbox is sitting on my shelf. im not going to pull the filter out when the measurements are available on the internet

i measured the box too not the filter so it will be smaller again.

Here's my issue. i wanted a POD but decided to go with a K&N panel because my air box has a few things on it which im not familiar with. Its got a sensor of some sort and a whole bunch of little hoses, I figured they were vacuums. Didn't wanna touch it in fear I would make matters worse.

Can the box be removed from a BA without any concequences and further tuning etc? Sorry to hijak the thread.

pod ftw! sounds so much better than panel filter, the actual kw gains arent huge (i mean we're only in na cars) but i'd personally say a boxed pod with CAI would be the best combo. and i mean a decent box with like silicon etc or whatever keeps the heat out~

I've read some (anecdotal admittedly) evidence that suggests a panel filter will flow more, and less turbulently than a pod of simillar surface area, all things being equal.

Having said that, a pod definantly gives you more options (such as sticking it away in places where you can't fit/wouldn't want a panel filter).

Any sort of resonator free intake system is going to make noise - i have a modified stock air box with my resonators removed and it howls and carries on - so the noise consideration is really a moot point i think.

I had a bit of a play around on the weekend.
I went down to Jaycar and picked up a thermometer with an external probe.
No matter what I did I couldn't get the under hood temp (probe sat between the battery and the air box) below 20C. Stop at lights and within 60 seconds the temp would approach 40C.
The next 5 minutes driving were spent dropping the temp back to 22C
I then put the sensor in the air box.
Driving I maintained about 12C and it took almost 5 minutes stationary for the temp in the air box to reach 18C (with the engine running).

All was done on the same Saturday morning with an average 10C ambient temp.

I'm going to replace my pod with an airbox soon.
Not only bcoz the law says I have to but also the new turbo will love the cold air.

i agree with u rupe. i have currently got that in my car and there was a difference in performance but there is a even bigger difference if u have extractors aswell..

dont go cheap if your going for a pod! they dont filter aswell as a panel filter unless you spend up with something good.
personally i took the pod out and replaced it with a high flow panel filter with an air feed.
feels great.
not looking back
economy has gone up heaps too..

I was reading an article in the New Zealand Performance car magazine about tuning up a N/A car and it said to get the biggest airbox you can that will that is shaped to optimise airflow (bellmouth the intakes, use curves, etc), it went as far as to say to shift your battery to the boot and do what ever you can to get a bigger airbox.
