Opinions on speakers

Hi All

I've finally upgraded my stock CD player in the Astina V6! I bought the Sony CDX-GT570. and to my shock disbelief, the stock speakers don't cut it!

Firstly, can I ask what size are the font and back and what brand will give me the best value for my money? I would like only to spend $100 - $130 a pair.

Thanks

Z

Spend your $$ on better speakers for the front rather than average speakers front and back. Turn the rears off or down a bit.

Your ears are up front - thats where you want the good sound to be.

Also, you can fit 6" round speakers be using an MDF spacer to fill the 5x7 hole.

avoid sony atm, they are dodgy.

jvc are ok budget, kenwood are average too. pioneer have some decent splits and alpine have some really good ones going cheap at the moment. i saw a set of $350 splits down to $160 the other day at JB, was so tempted to get them

if you dont want to go to a lot of effort (read lazy like me ), invest in some JL 120w 5x7" 2ways, I think JB still stock them for around $120 for the pair, I have had mine in my sp20 for near 2 years and they still hammer, very precise and clear.

I personally dont like Alpine for speakers, As Dogo said, spend your money on the fronts, trust me you'll save alot of money if you adhere to this simple rule, I just invested in a set of Boston 6" splits and they are the best speakers (for my ears) that i have ever heard!!! (Apart from Rockford Fosgate....with most good speakers a spacer will do but if the magnet is too big, you'll have to invest in some door pods like me.....lol

And on the other hand, i quite like my Alpine DDRs in the front, they're not too bright and have a nice warm sound. I can't stand overly bright speakers.

It really comes down to personal choice. Most good audio placed will have a sound board where you can at least hear the difference between speakers, but they'll probably sound a little different again once in a car.

Focal, Boston, MTX, Kicker and Bose are all pretyy good to my ear....

The Focal and Bostons are way $$$ though but the sound range is excellent...

The MTX, Kicker and Bose are all good and are slightly less priced then the above but they run very well from what ive listened too.

I just thought I'd add this in

LET YOUR EARS decide.

Even take your own music to test station and if you can run it the way you will in your car.

No amp - AMP. Hi cut off no cut off etc.

Alot of people use to freak when I had only $30 speakers in my old wagon because it sounded more like hi end Clarion or Alpine.
but because it was setup my way for my music. I liked it and It showed.

Every speaker is different and all music is different.

I even know my old HQ 7X10's in the back of my mx are excellent all round but are perfect for my music. But they ain't that great on some of techno or what I call Made up fake music. EG guy on Pc.

I like any thing from OPERA to old school RAP - Eg pre blin Pre Rich rap guys.
So its hard. to get right balance.

Also take note some cars just don't have the location.

If you look at some really good factory sount system and look at the speaker loactions and position.

Going to splits even off the head unit and just positioned well can make massive difference to the sound.

assuming you get 6-6.5" splits you'll need to make mdf spacers for the doors etc. there is a stickied high-quality speaker install on here for the bj, very similar process to installing in a ba. the only annoying bit is making the spacers (its not shown on the install either ), you'll probably have to go buy some if you're not good with a jigsaw.

otherwise the easiest way i found to do it is tracing the outlines of old and new speakers on paper, cutting it out and adjusting it till its right then tracing on mdf and cutting it out. also paint the spacer before you put it in, nice thick layers to water proof it.

best place to mount the split for me was just behind the A pillar on the door top. if you get the right shape holder/mount it'll be a flush neat job.

$100-$130 won't go far...

you're looking at $250 to get something decent... $200 minimum

My first pair were $190 JBL 6.5" splits... i thought they were good... wnd they definitely are great value... and then i found some alpine type r of the same size for $239 down at the jb-hifi stall at summernats... I think they're normally at least $300... and they are fantastic!

my tip... don't do it half assed... you will only be disappointed and end up wanting to start again... keep saving bud... buy your stereo piece by piece

well put..

correct installation and tuning is at least as important as high end gear. Obviously cheaper stuff will only go "so far" but with some effort it can sound amazing.

ye you really notice the cheapness of some the tweater parts of 2-3-4 way as it distorts quite abit as soon as the mid range of power output is passed. like its been said forkout for a good set of speakers at the front, switch the back ones of and wire it so that both front and rear left channels go to the left speaker, and so forth for right. that way ur getting all the power where it counts, where you are. unless you want to build a car to suit ur rear passangers, you wont even notice that the back ones are on or off, most of the sound is directed at the rear footplate and muffled by the seats and the carpet, unless you are putting them on the back shelf, then go all out there, rear window will angle the sound very nicely. might wanna get some pods for the rear and face the speakers up just a bit more so they face in to the cabin. just dont face them at the roof cus then it will sound quiter again
