Diy air intake ideas

As soon as my car comes back from the mechanic's im going to make my own ram air intake, What material would you guys reccomend or is there anything you would like me to try? If it turns out good i'll do an awesome write up on it.

I'm thinking auto exe style at the moment. What im thinking is make a make a model out of plastic sheeting and covering it with glad wrap, then fibre glass around the the model wait for everything to dry. Full the plastic out. It's just a minor thought at the moment would you do it differently if so how?

IMHO best way is to make an airbox that sits above that hole to enclose the cone filter, then you can drop a separate pipe from that hole down to the grille or behind the foglight or various other places (corksport ram air duct anyone?)

Keeps your filter up out of harms way, and the airbox means it's not going to be sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

Yup.

You could even plumb the stock airbox down to the lower grille rather than its pickup just under the bonnet line.

I'm actually going to try that. Doesn't look to hard overall, I'm pretty good with metal thanks to tafe and i have access to a welder for 3 weeks starting wednesday.

If you wanted to keep a somewhat stockish looking SRI, you could always run a 90 degree angled hose from the stock intake box to the grille?

I dont really care as long as i dont get defected. If i did something it would look awesome cause thats how i roll. I'm going to do something like what orion posted except il put a bit of led stripping at the bottom so it lights up at night cause that would look so cool.

It looks like he used aluminium sheeting. The only thing i wouldn't know how to do is make the lip on the lid. I'd do a prototype on cardboard first, transfer it onto some sheet metal and get cutting / folding. It looks like reasonably think sheet metal tho not just your standard.

I think he has also put some insulation on the inside of the box

I did notice that, along with some weather tripping to make sure theres a good seal on all the edges and when the lid is pressed down.
