I stand corrected... Qiklink (National Parts, and indeed ACL's) online catalouge doesn't differentiate between the two models... mmm... I'll have a squiz what Garmax says.

Now im p!ssed and i need help, i finally got my BPD piston crowns the other day and i opened up the box to find 2 carboned pistons and 2 clean pistons, so i investigated...i can now tell that one of the ring lands has a slight bump in it that i can get out with a points file BUT...the 2 clean pistons have detonation marks all over them.....ive been told they are unusable unless i want a smokey engine, ill post up pics very soon, is there anything i can do about this...im seriously considering buying a 1/2 cut fixing all the external seals and throwing it in....im sick of this sh!t and i keep on getting told i dont need to rebuild the engines they are good enough for 170kw...im thouroughly disappointed though...

bugger man, that bites. you can't get a piston of project.r? hes throwing out a busted BPT but at least one piston should be ok?

no way thats is dodgy,,,i dont see the point in opening up the engine if im not going to do it properly, im thinking of doing what everyone else does and just fixing up the external seals and doing up the box a bit, adding a FMIC, BOV and boost controller and turningit up to 14psi, thats it ...then latter the ECU...will still be fun but i wont be able to push it as hard.......i dont see the point in openinig it up and not changin ght e internals, i dont want massive power and ive been told that 170kw is very achieveavble and reliable out of a tuned BPT so....we'll see now i have some B6T rods that have been shotpeened sitting here to....

send them pistons back
they will kill ya motor

do as Ross said on FL
put BPT pistons in with B6T/BPD rods..
bitching about "omg they'll fail at 18psi" who cares
the people that have had them "fail" on 18psi are the ones that use them with a small turbos (vj20/VF8-12's) that over heats everything once over 14psi

with a 2871r 18psi will be cool and safe for BPT pistons...will make lotsa power too..id be more worried about the gearbox's than the engine

yeah i am now considering that option, it seems feesable and doable without being overdone for what i want.....i am sending the pistons back, he has offered a full refund...so thats good...i already have the B6T rods shotpeened to so that saves some time....and mucking around, i think for safe keeping when i get the engine ill do the FMIC, BOV, Boost controller and set it to 12psi just to get used to it, then about 6 month down the track ECU and 16psi...then a bit later bigger turbo ( but not to big, lag is gay) i will do the gearbox stuff from the strta though to get it out of the way....

there's always wiseco pistons we have on offer as previously mentioned, but obviously that depends on your budget, or if you want the lsd first.

OK new list again...lol

I have decided to do the little things first and upgrade as i go...so..

1st Stage:
BPT
New head Gasket
Shotpeened B6T rods
inspect and replace any bearings that may need replacing
New Piston rings if they need it
all new externel seals and liquids
will get the head cleaned up and checked
FMIC
GT2871r Turbo with custom welded flange (maybe a VF12 will do though)
2.5" Dump
14psi
New Pipes all round
Turbotech boost controller
New Pirtek braided oil pipes
3inch exhaust
Water Pump
Mazdaspeed Oil Pump

2nd stage:
injectors
Fuel pump
ECU
FPR

So basically a freshen up...check everything is good and slight upgrade for 1st stage, im yet to decide whether or not i want a bigger turbo from the start or just stick to the VF12 hybrid because of ease of install and use, Ive been informed that this will be a ble to handle 170 kw reliably on roughly 16psi after the second stage
I will also do all the Box upgrades i want to do to keep it all good, these mods should get me what i want with minimal fuss....
I also found this while i was scoutig for turbo's a worth while read: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ch_center.html

new pistons and rings maybe???
running 14psi regularly against 15yo+ pistons will be an issue.
cos the engine is opened up anywayz for other stuff.

Ive been told that the pistons can handle up to 18psi reliably...despite their age...

that be questionable. regularly and reliably??? not the point i'm getting at anywayz sorry.

if your engine is open up at the time of rebuilding, then my not cover all the bases and finish off the bottom end. you are pulling out the crank, rods (B6T replacements) and pistons, so why not upgrade those pistons/rings now? that way the inturnals are done with?

ryan

i agree, i refer back to my previous post. i'm of the opinion if you're going to do it, do it right the first time so you dont have to do it half arsed several times

on your list i'd also just replace all of the bearings. same reason as above

B.S. If the pistons are removed and they look like the BPD ones, replace them. If they are in good nick...ther will be no issues. 14psi is nothing. The thing that kills pistons is detonation. The higher the boost, the higher the chance of detonation. When the ECU goes in, and he has it tuned by a reputable tuner who know's what he is doing through the tuning process, there will be ZERO issues even up to 18psi or beyond. However if you are going to up at those levels, and detonation does occur, it won't take long for it to crack the pistons. That's why people get forgies...they are more resilliant to detonation.

The other thing I'd suggest to you Zappy which hasn't been mentioned is, make sure you do a compression test on the engine before you open it up. This will make it easier for you to determine whether you need to do a ring replace.

What compression PSI am i looking for on a GTX exactly? 180psi? I will see how we do when the pistons are out and i will inspect them, i quite agree with you all, do the job the first time right but if it can handle what i want without hassle why replace them, Ive even beent told to leave all the bearings if they are good so....

i guess it goes along the saying of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But as you said, you want to do it right the first time...so it comes down to how much you want to spend on your engine. As has been discussed, all the mods you listed for the engine were overkill with your turbo and power output applicaton. In all seriousness, that's why i went with the GTR engine. It has everything YOU need/want. You'd get 170KW at the wheels with a standard BPC8 ECU. But, you don't want to go down that line, so back on track.

Comp would be good if it were above 150 and the reading were in 15psi of high to low. Factory specs say minimum of 119psi and a max differnce of 28psi
