LSD for SP20 box
Hey guys,
Just wondering on if anyone has given one of these a go in an SP20 - http://www.phantomgrip.com/order?pag...category_id=23 They look decent at quite an attractive price.. If someone knows of a better option without a crack pipe price, Let me know. Cheers. |

Never heard of that brand, but im a little weary as it states its for an FP, and they all came with F Series gearboxes.
Mazdaspeed or Mfactory is the way to go IMO, but they are around the $1000 mark..

You need to understand how a phantom grip works first before you make a decission on purchasing them. googling will find you heap of info about them as they have been around for over 10 years.
There was a bloke that make and installed them for $250 20 minutes from me. The basicly lock up the axles upon accelleration and unlock upon deccelleration. Very far from a 2 way diff as explained in the linked listing. The are a couple of blocks that go inside the spider gears and expand/seperate to lock up the whole diff. Seen lots of issues with these blocks not fitting in correctly and requiring extra machining to fit. They are a cheaper alternative, but they have therir pros and cons. And I will say that there is a reason why more people still get regular limited slip diffs compared to these phantoms. |

Simple Answer for it is - it's rubbish.
Before manufacturing in china was cheap enough about late 90's many were fitting them into many cars. The simple thing does work on stock car up to a point. But many models that they fitted them into that actually had some fair amount of torque - well it was no real success. The fact you can get a real LSD be it a Torsen or Mechanical type for 90% of most cars now. At 1/2 of what they were back then. The biggest issue is your dealing with a Diff in a SP20 in G series box that goes back along time and will fail under abuse. All these Phantom grips have shown is it slows down the rate on track car. does not stop it . Might give you one extra track day. I put onto a Auto box that uses the same size diff and internals. Box still blew - Spiders still ground down |

That will only work for F Series Boxes, you will need to get a Mazdaspeed, Mfactory or Quaife LSD.
I got my Mfactory for 960? posted with bearings etc.

An Mfactory LSD will last the life of the car while I'd expect to be replacing the phantom grip after 20-30k. I wouldn't call that cheaper with the all labour that's involved.

Cheers guys for the informative replies, Was just curious but never really read into it.. Seems to be almost as bad as a minispool really..
Okay another question, Will the FS-DE powered 626 gearbox use the same spline driveshafts and will a MFactory LSD fit one? Not keen on taking the car off the road, So thoughts are grab a 626 box which i assume has longer gear ratios and whack an LSD in it, Swap it all over into the SP20.. |

Has a taller fifth gear otherwise the same.

takes only a weekend at most to take the gearbox out of your car, tear it down to swap the diff, and put it back in the car
nobody gets the phantomcrap for their proteges because there's been better solutions for the longest time... quaife, mazdaspeed, or m-factory... three choices, different prices and quality... you pick... they're all decent at the very least

If this is for track work the MSP LSD maybe a better buy specially if your not putting out much power as its clutch based.
Something that you will need to way up

It will be used for track nights yes, It is currently putting out 230hp at the one wheel :P
5th gear is bullcrap at the moment, ~3100rpm @ 100km hence me asking about the 626 box.. I'll put an LSD in and have a longer 5th, Two birds with one rock i guess. |

Depends on what GF- model 626 box you use. Don't use a GE model.
S1 626 had different gears to S2/S3(post 99) - it's only 2nd and 3rd or 3rd 4th can't remember and it has the mildly taller 5th gear. But for a direct fit use the same model type so depends on your model Sp20. And yes they should be 28 spline on the 626 box. |

the 5th/reverse gear design changed throughout the years of the G series box... you're best finding one from a GF instead of GE as it is essentially the same as the BJ's except for gear ratios
the USDM 5th gear is shorter than the 626 5th gear but still is taller than the AUDM/JDM/EDM one.... I think it's 3000rpm at 105km/h... I don't remember, I don't pay attention to that crap when I drive
