i just got some wire that was a decent thickness so that when it was bent it would hold shape, i pushed one end of the wires between the metal and plastic on the (green) bulb holders so that when the LEDs are inserted to the original positions the wires are held in securely, i then soldered the other ends of the wires to the additional LEDs, testing the polarity because it makes a difference with LEDs... i then bent the wires into place so that the LEDs shone in the appropriate areas...
I also sprayed the entire area surrounding the LEDs in chrome to maximise brightness... im not sure how much this helped but i wanted to get it right the first time and ive had good results

I am talking about the Red Ones for REar Brake lights etc, I know they are normally square blocks and put out more light and more spread then traditional LEDs.

autolumination.com

ledshoponline.com

don't try the 'double filament' LED tail/brake bulbs - they're crap!
