About 1990 323 Astina 1.8 DOCH Engine

Hi to all!
I would like to apply to my stock engine a Turbo kit. I reckon that the factory made turbo will be the best solution. Do you think 2004 MX5 SP Turbo could be suited to my engine or I should try to get Japanise GTR BP 1.8 Turbo kit?

I do not need excessive power, I just wanna get a bit extra pumping, that's all My car used unleaded petrol, but there is no CAT on it. I just wanna raise the power to around 160 HP.

As a start you would be better using the GTX manifold and turbo. The Mx-5 set puts the turbo in the wrong place.

As Cosmo said, you would be better off using the GTX turbo (VJ20) + manifold to begin with, get all your piping + a gtx/r intercooler. There are a few things that you will need, its not just a bolt on procedure. There's a few threads on fordlaser.com about doing the same thing - search it there.

Why do you need a turbo then? 120hp -> 160hp is quite easy without a turbo.

umm yea you cant just go down to mazda, buy a turbo, turn a few spanners and have a turboed car that will last. do you know anything about strengthening the internals?

turboing a car is a nightmare. A mate of mine turboes his 85RWD celica the dodgy way and that was s*** from day one and blew the engine completelly 3-4 months later.

now he's cut sick and is putting a 1JZ into it, doing it properly ($8,000 later) but it should be damn quick.

Well 160hp is easy.
I dynoed over that on my astina with BP.

I had the J-Spec BP (from japan)+ECU
Custom made exhaust manifold
K/U Hybrid AFM
Corksport cams
Ported head + ported intake manifold
2.5" exhaust
Denso Iridium plugs
Magnecor leads.
CAI

You tune the AFR with the K/U Hybrid AFM and you dont need standalone to fine tune it.

Thats still a bit of work. Not a simple "bolt on" approach.

Thank you guys! for being very helpful...

I have decided not to turbo my car. As I told you, I don't have a CAT on it and my country rules are okay for having it without CAT. It means I can use the preCAT ECU so that I will get around 140ps insead of 128ps. That's enough to me. Does anybody have an idea how to get that preCAT ECU?

using a pre-cat engine to make more than 160hp..easy i did it im making 138whp, so + 20% drive lose = about 165hp

but i did use a link ecu...but with stock BP cams..no re-grinds or anything

Users on here obviously dont realise that BP NA And BPT share the same rods, the same crank, the same heads and the same everything bar cam profiles and pistons

and even then, the only difference is BP na has higher compression pistons.

Theres no reason you cant do it, its just easier to buy a complete package.

Oh btw, as long as you have a turbo tps, you can run a a bpt from a bp twin cam stock engine. Just gotta keep the boost low.

Stewy, so what you mean I can have BPT/ GTX turbo kit and apply to my engine without any hassle. I really don' t want a lot power, I like the idea of 2003 MX5 SE... I need around 170hp.

I realise that the compression ratio of my engine is higher than BPT as turbo needs some energy from exhaust gas... Do you guys think it is better to have a complete BPT engine rather than getting only the turbo set of BPT? THe problem is I do not have BPT engine over here, actually I am the only one having BP engine! So I may stick with the idea of having preCAT and its peripherals... Need your valuable comments now

Stewy, What do u mean by saying keep the boost low? What would be the max pressure without having any drama with my BP engine with BPT turbo kit? As I said, I am not able to get a complrte BPT engine in Turkey...
