What would you classify as an engine mod?
Being a P-Plater in Vic, I am not allowed to have any engine modifications.
And you do not wanna test your luck to get away with it coz if youre caught its 3 demerit points and a $1100 fine. Anyway, I was wondering what would be classed as an engine mod? ie, cannons, pods, panel filter etc. coz I really wanna do something to my car, but not cop the demerit point loss and fine. |

Pod - yes Panel filter - no. your car already has one. if you run a CAI to it then yes If you want some more zip shed some weight. Lose 50kg in a 1100kg car and thats around a 5% power to weight improvement. more than most basic engine mods

non engine mods to make car faster:
less weight, engine has less to pull, so car is faster. Also uses less fuel. smaller and wider tyres/rims, smaller diameter makes acceleration better, wider makes more grip, but the smaller diameter also makes the speedo inaccurate. really there's no way around it, as soon as you open the bonnet to change something so it's no longer factory, it can be classed as a mod.

From the GLS site, you can't drive a car with
"An engine that has been modified to increase the vehicle's performance." I can't find any detail to describe what they consider to fall under this. Call Vicroads to be sure. We can only guess here |

The way around it, is to be smart and not stupid
I've been building Falcons for this for the last well since they broguht in the new laws. Yes for those who wonder - Yes I'm trying ot Kill P-platers and take the money. Put simply it's same ruels apply for insurance. 90% of insurance policy allows you to change your exhaust system. It does not say this can't be bigger or larger - they just want it legal but will only replace it with and equivlant. So if your exahust is rusted out and your cat is blocked Replacing the whole exhaust system with new Cat happens ot be new AC/delco one is reasonable. Under grounds of cost- Yes a new mazda one is $200 - VR holde n is $80 - what ever. Next you have new exhuast system it's still -legal. But you have hi flowing Lucky 2.25inch mufflers etc. Here in NSW I know cops look for extractors now. But whos to say the stock cast manifold can't be extrude honed - Or with the right modification have set of genin extractors covered with bits of a cast iron manifold welded on and factory heat sheild. I know it's not right. But hell it's all about how you look at it. that's the problem with small 4's to get more as 90% are alot more stressed then a lazy 6 or bent 8. End of the day, If you don't want trouble don't bother looking into modifications. |

Put in a new panel filter, if it's a BG don't we have cold air intakes from under the wheel arch anyway?
