new guy from around the way a bit

hey there everybody I am Mike and from the US....damn sounds like an intro to a 12 step meeting....anyways...I am the proud owner of a 93 Ford Escort GT, which in some areas is known as a Ford Laser...but without the cool awd or turbo that was in the TX3...also known to have the same chassis as the Mazda 323 a.k.a Astina....well certain years anyway...I'll include a pic here

and say that I have owned this car dam near forever, bought second hand in 95 and have added somewhere around 22k miles to her and quite a bit of modifications which are as follows

centerforce dual friction performance clutch
front and rear strut tower bars by Ractive
lower tie bar by Mazdaspeed
slotted/grooved front rotors with carbon fibre pads by KVR
coil spring conversion kit...not actual coils that I would like...yet
urethane motor mount inserts from Energy Suspension
upgraded brake lines by Goodridge
15 inch alloys by Konig
custom exhaust and intake
9mm plug wires by Taylor
Carbon fibre and blue custom hood/bonnet
and some general interior styling workings

on hand ready for install is a performance shifter by TWM which if time is found will be installed this week

some of the plans for this car include the engine sitting in my shop that I am upgrading for more power using a turbo and the one other thing that has been a bit of a bother so far is the front end conversion that I am interested in so to set off my car as one of a kind on these shores....I want the Astina popup light style front end body

which is one of the main reasons I am here and was directed here by someone on another board....hopefully I can find somen or some company willing to ship the parts I need for this

well that's my story to this point I will add that I am glad to be here and just to be a bit of a braggart...all work performed on my car with the exception of the bodywork was done by me as will future work

Mike

the colour is like that because of the custom bodywork that has been done and it is not quite finished and ready for the respray

thank about the front end...although I am actively trying to change it around to another style like the Astina with the popuplights...too many cars around here with this front end

tbh I wished they had sold the five door Astina here...but oh well..

Mike

btw, the one in your avatar is nice...that style has an agressive look

change the fronts, never seen that before, maybe just look around for fronts that aren't available from the USA, here are some examples of agressive fronts for escorts from mates cars. i love the evo 3 bar on the maroon tx3

Have you ever considered a GTR BPT rather then a rebuild and aftermarket turbo? I have a GTX and the improvement over NA is *quite* noticeable.

Your car looks nice. Understated toughness.

yes, I have considered the GTR BPT...and they can be a bit hard to findd...there are tons of GTX converts here...but I will keep with the current path unless a GTR can be had for a decent price

also on the GTR, are the internals uprated from the GTX?

ah ffs, I did write a big post about the pros and cons of GTR vs rebuilding, but something went wrong and its not here....

so in teh end the final result was the GTR worked out cheaper but the rebuild worked out to be more reliable (warranty). Figures I used were 3.2k for GTR and 4k for rebuild.

yep...this is the dilemma about the gtr....one advantage about the rebuild is that with the exception of the machine shop service for the head work and balancing the lower assembly...I can do the rest myself...I have been a mechanic for more than a couple of years and that helps a bunch...although this will be my first full up turbo build from an n/a engine...so there is definitely a learning curve here for me

hey kthl...yep made it over here cheers

5 k for a GTR? When I went shoping back in january they were 3.2.

If your a mechanic yourself, I would recomend the rebuild... Your going to be able to get parts cheaper then the rest of us anyway.

//edit I just realised whats missing from your car that makes it look so different...

Wheres the numberplate?

the cost is in the work, not in the parts, and if a shop was charging you $4k for a rebuild it would be a heap stronger than the GTR

yeah that is one reason I am planning on the rebuild more so than the gtr...I am doing all the labor with the exception of the machine shop charges....which getting the head the way I want is going to cost me as I am sending it out to a specialty shop for complete rework to include custom cams

the numberplate....ahhh one of the great things about living in the state of Arkansas...no front plates and no annual inspection.....no emmissions testing either

still, we dont have annual inspections here and you generally only get a emissions test if youve been a naughty boy.

Wow. Left hand steer looks so odd. But then again you probobly think that about right hand steer.
