BA 97 hatch boot fail...

Rain seems to play a part in this happening but my boot just keeps falling down whenever I open it. I guess the piston things which provide the resistance to hold the heavy ass boot up have given up so i've been smacked on the top of the head a few too many times and would rather not cut myself a piece of wood to hold the boot open!

Anybody know how to replace the pistons (i dont know what else to call them?) - or if theres a better fix for this , i guess it's best to order from mazda, anybody know how much they'll cost as well?

Thanks!

Gas struts is what they're called. You can pick them up off ebay, or there's services that come to you. Or from Mazda

ah! the name helps a lot!

Rang up mazda and one side is 170 bucks and the others is 146!! the guy tells me that there's a demister control in there? if that's true then that willn mean the ebay ones will disable the rear hatch demister? i'll have a closer look later but I don't quite believe it?

The hell? I don't see how there's be a demister control in them. Maybe he was thinking more of the hatch hinges? But even then the wiring is a separate loom AFAIK

I think he made a wild guess to explain the price difference, still a mystery why they aren't the same price.

I found that link as well and was about to buy them too until i talked to that mazda guy. I think i'll be buying from ebay anyway, just can't warrant that price difference $60 compared to $220 even if he were correct. I'll just carry a chamois in the car

thanks for the help rupe
