New Tyre Choice Options

Hey all... I'm in the market for some new shoes for my SP20... i've done my shopping around (i've had no license for two and a half months so that helps!) for new tyres and these are my short-listed options... This is around the mark i want to spend so please not to many more suggestions!

Bridgestone Potenza GIII - $199ea
Toyo Proxes T1-S - $190ea
Goodyear F1 GS D3 - $195ea

All in 205/50/R16 (I've got 6.5" wide skyline gts rims)

Please let me know if any of you have used these tyres and what your opinion is and how may kms you managed to get out of them... I managed 50 thou from the original Yoko A460's!

I've heard and read good things about the "Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3" given their price. I have Sumitomo which are mainly unknown, they are very good in the wet but are noisy below 70kph.

go for 205/45/16 tyres.

they'll keep your speedo far more accurate.

i have toyo proxes t1-s on my car and i am very very happy with them. very grippy. when i was on the 1/4 mile at willowbank, i got a faster 60ft time (2.142 seconds) than a mate in america who has the same car and was running supposebly stickier tyres (falken azenis). he got a 2.248 seconds for a 60ft time

have been using GIII for 2.5 years, no complain, grip for the life of the tyre, I once had FM901 and grips like hell in the beginning but not so at after around 40% used
the only problem is that the rubber gone quite quickly, i need to change them approx every 1/2 year (only because of my driving style)

T1-S grips really well, absolutely outrun the stock chassis/suspension setup.

was interested in the eagles, and still am. and gsd3 looks nicer than the T1-S i should say. ops:

Unfortunately the Dunlop SP9000 are not made to fit anything less than 17" rims. Pirelli I am not sure about. In either case they are both not budget tyres (since the ones you mentioned are all under $200ea).
If you want non-directional tyres the Dunlop LM702 (Le Mans) are reasonably priced, but I found my old LM701s would aquaplane badly, I don't know about the newer 702 tread pattern? They are popular though...
Of the 3 you mentioned I would try the Eagle GSD3, only because I have been dissappointed by Bridgestone's passenger tyres in the past, although they have a really nice looking tread pattern if that matters to you?

are SP9000s run flat? i had an impression that the mini copper s have them.

Falken SRT115's are meant to be awesome. Don't know whether they come in that size though 0_o

I got Bridgestone GIII's about 6 months ago and I'm really happy with them. Good grip, in both dry and wet, and fairly quiet. Not too sure about wear as I havent really put too many km's on them yet.

Just a point about the size... As the second (45 or 50 etc) number is a percentage of the width (195 or 205 etc) my calculations are as follows:

195/50/16 (stockies) = 97.5mm sidewall
205/45/16 = 92.25mm sidewall
205/50/16 = 102.5mm sidewall

Therefore, whichever size i chose, my speedo's going to be out slightly, by about the same amount either way as well. So the thing it comes down to for me, is that i do a lot of freeway driving and i'd prefer the engine to be revving less at those speeds (I reckon it needs a six gear anyways!!) hehe

As i said tho... thanks for all your comments... keep 'em coming. I've got another week till i get my license back to make a decision!!

yeah it is the same difference...however, dont get yourself caught speeding as you'll be traveling faster than what the speedo says.

another thing too, when i got 205.45.16's for mine, when i tested over those 5km markers your see on the highway, i was perfect on 5k's.

also you'll have a slight advantage in accelarating faster hehehe

hey, just found out the GIII comes in 195/50/R16 and would fit the stock 16*6 RIMS just right.

anyone saw that size being imported into OZ? cause it's not available in NZ.

btw, it looks for 40/45 series, 7 inch would sit right/tight for 205 tyres, and 7.5 for 215 tyres.
