Existing wires on SP20 Head Unit???

Hi all,

I just bought myself a pioneer double din AVH-p6850DVD head unit to replace the stock mazda unit.
I've been able to successfully wire the system up and works like a charm, the only thing is though, there are three wires left over from the old connection which i have not used in my new unit. One of which is a really thick black one, its thick like a speaker wiring for your home theatre systems. (Its definately not for the aerial, well atleast i think not, because there is a seperate aerial jack). There's also 2 other small wires left behind.

So i'm not sure what they're for. If anyone has any idea please let me know.

Cheers,

ST

The only thick black wire I remember is the is the ground connection. What did you wire the headunit ground to?

I'm not sure what the other 2 wires are, but I'm guessing at least 1 of them would be for dimming the lights.

This may help:

Pic originally from here

Pin #: Wire Color - Use

Pin 1: Green / Orange - Rear Right Speaker (-)
Pin 2: Green - Rear Right Speaker (+)
Pin 3: Brown - Rear Left Speaker (-)
Pin 4: Brown / White - Rear Left Speaker (+)
Pin 5: White - Front Right (-)
Pin 6: Red - Front Right (+)
Pin 7: Black / White - Front left (-)
Pin 8: Black / Brown - Front Left (+)
Pin 9: Black - Ground (see note below)
Pin 10: Pink / Black - Switched power, coonect to red wire in aftermarket harness.
Pin 11: White / Blue - Dimmer, not typicaly used for an aftermarket radio
Pin 12: Green / Black - Illumination
Pin 13: Blue / Red - Contasnt Power aka Battery aka Memory, connect to yellow wire in aftermarket harness.

NOTE: For aftermarket units, bolt ground wire directly to frame of car instead of using chassis ground wire on harness. Using the harness ground almost always introduces alternator whine.

thanks chipa that helps heaps! fortunately i got everything right!!

I grounded my head unit directly to the frame of the car and just covered the existing grounding cable. It's an awfully thick cable though.

In the process of doing all of this, i managed to bust the hazard light button. And i'm not sure if this is replacable, didn't see if it could be taken out.

on the BA it controls when the stock stereo background illumination is on.

basically you turn on your lights and your stereo lights up. aftermarket ones dont use it

The illumination is there for when you turn your lights on at night it triggers the dim on the headunit. This is for units that are bright during daylight which can be annoying at night in the dark. It is totally upto you if you want it installed but it is usually a good idea to connect it at least and if you didn't want to use turn it off in the headunit.

If u do have the dimmer option hook it up ... I found it useful as the light is pretty bright off a headunit and can get annoying when driving at night.

There was also an "auto antenna" wire connected. Considering the ariel is fixed, what is this for?

the antenna is an automatic one, it should go up and down when the headunit turns on the off. that wire can be connected to a +ve out on the headunit for auto control or even a relay and a switch so you can control when it works.

WIth the BJ's in particular, they are fixed, so that rules out the automatic antenna...
